Sounds a bit suspicious, though very romantic. We do have a Saluda, VA but it is on the Middle Peninsula.....no where near where I understand the Mustains to have lived. Chris, I found two references to a John Maddox in the War of 1812 on the Virginia Library digital site.....URL < http://www.lva.Lib.va.us/dlp/index.htm> go to military history, ask for name search , type in Maddox, then keep hitting the blue lines or numbers for your guy. It tells you the references for John Maddox, don't know if this is your guy or not. Don't forget to check the newspaper sites for deaths and marriages. This is the best VA research site on the net. You can spend days on it, when a site says you must have a TIFF to read, if you have Adobe Acrobat, you have a TIFF. If you click to documents, when the locked computer comes up, click read on this page. Use your back arrow to go back and forth, make sure you click read on this page now, each time.....Have fun, even a beginner computer user like me, hasn't gotten in trouble, just experiment.... We'll all be fat, just as before that wretched Family Tree. Sad to relate, the Preacher called and visited for a spell. We talked about the Gospel, and other things as well, The heathen folk, the poor and then - 'twas fate, it had to be. Somehow the conversation turned to Grandma and the Family Tree. He never knew his Grandpa, his mother's name was---Clark? He and Grandma talked and talked, outside it grew quite dark. We'd hoped our fears were groundless, but just like some disease, Grandma's become an addict - she's hooked on Family Trees! Our souls were filled with sorrow, our hearts sank with dismay, Our ears could scarce believe the words we heard our Grandma's say, "It sure is a lucky thing that you have come to me, I know exactly how it's done, I'll climb your Family Tree!" Hello: I am looking for the record of John Maddox of Pittsylvania County, VA. I believe he served in the War of 1812. Any information would be appreciated. Christine Cable
I wonder if the Glen Shelton who for years wrote a column in The Vernon Daily Record, Vernon, Wilbarger county, Texas is descended from this line. He was in Vernon at least in the 1940s and 1950s. She's tracking back the family, we'll all have pedigrees. Oh, Grandma's got a hobby, she's climbing Family Trees. Poor Grandpa does the cooking and now, or so he states, That worst of all, he has to wash the cups and dinner plates. Grandma can't be bothered, she's busy as a bee Compiling genealogy - for the Family Tree. She has no time to baby-sit, the curtains are a fright, No buttons left on Granddad's shirt, the flower bed's a sight. She's given up her club work, the serials on TV, The only thing she does nowadays is climb the Family Tree. She goes down to the courthouse and studies ancient lore, We know more about our forebears than we ever knew before. The books are old and dusty, they make poor Grandma sneeze, A minor irritation when you're climbing Family Trees. The mail is all for Grandma, it comes from near and far, Last week she got the proof she needs to join the DAR. A worthwhile avocation, to that we all agree, A monumental project, to climb the Family Tree. Now some folks came from Scotland and some from Galway Bay, Some were French as pastry, some German, all the way. Some went on west to stake their claim, some stayed near by the sea, Grandma hopes to find them all as she climbs the Family Tree. She wanders through the graveyard in search of date or name, The rich, the poor, the in-between, all sleeping there the same. She pauses now and then to rest, fanned by a gentle breeze That blows above the Fathers of all our Family Trees. There were pioneers and patriots mixed in our kith and kin Who blazed the paths of wilderness and fought through thick and thin. But none more staunch than Grandma, whose eyes light up with glee Each time she finds a missing branch for the Family Tree. Their skills were wide and varied, from carpenter to cook And one (Alas!) the record shows was hopelessly a crook. Blacksmith, weaver, farmer, judge, some tutored for a fee, Long lost in time, now all recorded on the Family Tree. To some it's just a hobby, to Grandma it's much more, She knows the joys and heartaches of those who went before. They loved, they lost, they laughed, they wept, and now for you and me. They live again in spirit, around the Family Tree. At last she's nearly finished and we are each exposed. Life will be the same again, this we all supposed! Grandma will cook and

Hello, I'm working on the family of John & Tabitha (Shelton) Rickabaugh of Pittsylvania Co., VA and Gallia Co., OH. I believe John is the s/o John & Elizabeth (Griffith) Rickabaugh. Tabitha is almost certainly related to the family of Claiborne & Saluda (Mustain) Shelton...but I've yet to determine the exact connection. Would love to work with anyone interested in these lines and will be happy to share the information I've put together to date. Excerpted her are three generations of their line. Looking forward to hearing from you and will be happy to provide a gedcom with sources to interested researchers. He married on 20 Jan 1814 in Gallia Co., OH Tabitha SHELTON, born 26 Oct 1794 in Ohio; died aft 1840, daughter of Claiborne A. SHELTON and Saluda MUSTAIN ("Luedy"). Ellet Notes for Tabitha SHELTON There is no substantial proof that Tabitha is the daughter of Claiborne and Saluda...just circumstantial evidence. >From a typewritten sheet received from Margaret Alford we find only four marriages of persons surname SHELTON marrying in Gallia Co., OH during the time frame of 1800-1820. These marriages are: Henly to Hannah RICE, Jesse to Peggy BLAKE, John to Kitty MOSSBARGER, and Tabitha to John RICKABAUGH. Henly, Jesse, and John are all known children of Claiborne and Saluda. The next marriage in chronological order belongs to Thomas and Polly CARTER ...another know child of Claiborne and Saluda. Strong circumstantial evidence that Tabitha...the only other SHELTON married in this county...is their sister. This SHELTON family appears to be the only one residing there in this time frame. It has also been hypothesized that Tabitha was the daughter Jesse Mustain and his second wife Polly Brewis. They were married in 1793...and Jesse died in June 1794. It would be likely that an infant would be adopted by her aunt and uncle. Notes for Susanna Belle RICKABAUGHObituary of Susanna Rickabaugh Waite 30 Mar 1899 "Susanna Rickabaugh WAITE died at her father's house near Kelseyville Thursday, March 21, 1899. Beneath the same roof she was born November 8, 1870; and here she had grown up to womanhood. She finished her education at the Lakeport Academy, and then taught for a time in our public schools. She married George Walter [sic] WAITE January 15, 1894, and to them were born three children. For two or three years past she had not been well, but few thought of her case as dangerous till she neared the end of her life. For some time she had entertained hope in Christ, and that hope, tested and tried by the suffering that preceded her death, became a strong anchor to her soul. A foretaste of heaven's joys was given her. She desired to make a public profession of her faith in Christ and was baptized and received into the Presbyterian Church Sunday, March 19th. Forth from the home that had sheltered her for so large a part of her life her remains were borne on the following Thursday. A service was held in the Presbyterian Church in the presence of a great company of people, and from thence they passed to the city of the dead. In the narrow home her body sleeps, awaiting the trumpet call of the resurrection morn. The clouds above were dark and the rain fell; fit emblems of our sorrow; but the sun was shining above the clouds, and the joy and glory of the resurrection morning shall follow the night of death, and we are comforted.
