Jan, I think that we have been in contact before. I descend from Crispen Shelton through two of his sons, Armistead and Abraham. I, also, descend through Crispen's brother, Daniel. I am very interested in your "Payne/Shelton theory". I actually already have Payne "pencilled in" as Lettice's surname. I will check and see where my info. came from. Please, let me know how your research goes and if I come across anything pertinent, I will be sure to let you know. Posted on: Pittsylvania Co. Va Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Pittsylvania/299 Surname: Durnil ------------------------- My g. g. g. grandfather, William Durnil, appeared on the 1790 census in Pittsylvania County. That's about all I know of him, except for some of his children, including my g.g. grandfather James Durnil who was born (I think) in Pittsylvania Co. in 1763. James Durnil's wife, Martha Crusenberry was born in Virginia in 1800. Anyone knowing anyting about these folks, please let me know what you know.
Hello "Cousin" Jan, I too descend from Crispin and Lettice (very interested in the Payne theory..see end of message) through THREE of their sons: Gabriel, who married Elizabeth Shepard, d/o ?????? Beverly who married Anne Coleman d/o ???? Vincent who married Susannah Robertson, d/o Henry, s/o Christopher d. 1749 Amelia Co VA Gabriel had daughter Elizabeth Shelton, Beverly had son Charles Coleman Shelton These two married (of course!!) and produced Moses Hurt Shelton. Vincent had son Crispin Robertson Shelton who married Mary "Polly" Waller, d/o JOhn Waller and Mary Polly Cooper, d/o Thomas Cooper & Sarah Anthony. Vincent and Mary Polly had daughter Nancy Clark Shelton, the Clark being from Sarah's mother Elizabeth daughter of Christopher Clark and Penelope Johnson. Any way, Moses Hurt and Nancy Clark married (of course), moved to Todd Co KY ca, 1835, then to Lawrence Co MO ca, 1845 (doing from memory). What actually caught my attention was the name Payne idea and I am curious about what progress you are making. Actually, one of Gabriel and Elizabeth's children has the middle name BANKS, which is also a surname in their vicinity and has caused me to wonder. For Pittsylvania Sheltons, for a while I was told that I could descend from an Elizabeth CHOWNING who married Edward CHOATE, probably in Henry/Franklin/Pittsylvania. I went to the website below on the descendants of Thomas and Phoebe Payne that I thought might be of interest to Payne researchers: Janet Hunter http://w3.one.net/~evaughan/vaughan/wilson.htm
To: Lila Walters Moorer: RE: THOMAS WALTERS According to my information, my grandmother Vivian Ella Caroline WALTERS Anderson (b. 2 Sep. 1887), 9th daughter of my great-grandfather, James Volney WALTERS (b. 25 Nov. 1827), was the son of William W. WALTERS (b. 1805) who was the son of Jackson WALTERS (b. 7 Oct. 1772) and his 2nd wife Polley West Herring. Jackson was the son of Robert H. WALTERS (b. abt. 1750?) who was the son of the Thomas WALTERS (b. 14 April 1732) you are inquiring about. I have copies of several of the pages of the family Bible I believe you are referring to (the LEWIS family Bible). I received these copies from my dad who obtained them in the 1970s from another WALTERS descendant. My information gives the name of the father of Thomas WALTERS as William (Waters/Watters)WALTERS (b. before 1697 in Scotland - wife Elizabeth Robertson - married 15 June 1722 in Liberton, Midlothian, Scotland). My information gives the name of William (Waters/Watters) WALTERS as Archibald WALTERS b. about 1673, and his father as William WALTERS b. about 1650. I do not have documentation for all of this information as of yet, but this is the information I have, and this might give you some avenues to check. I would be glad to share other information with you from my WALTERS line and would be interested in receiving information from your WALTERS line. Kathy Anderson Goins klgcute@aol.com
> > I don't have a copy of Thomas Payne's Will .. but I do have a copy of William Paynes (please note .. there is NO mention of a Thomas) ... and here it is: Kevin, Thanks for pointing this out. I had Thomas as son of this William (according to April Miller) appparently in error as Thomas wasn't mentioned in will nor reason given for deletion. Working with my Payne and Shelton lines; what can be documented- Thomas (Sr.) Payne, parentage unknown, b.1684 Middlesex County, Virginia d.April 19, 1761 Essex County, Virginia. Have copy of this will from Essex Co., Virginia Will Book 11, page 290; children listed- "sons, Thomas, John, and Reubin and to my four daughters Lettice, Frances, Catharine and Mary seven shillings Sterling to be equally devided amongst them in full of my Estate. Item I give and bequeath to my two sons William & Phillimon all the money that I have out at Interest and in the House to them and their heirs forever." My interest in this Payne family is that my Shelton family also in Middlesex County. Am working on the theory that Thomas's dau. Lettice m.Crispin Shelton 1734 Middlesex County Virginia. Dates and location match, no documentation..yet. Notice the witnesses to William Payne will- Armstead Shelton, Beverly Shelton, Stephen Shelton. Armistead and Beverly are sons of Crispin Shelton and Lettice; I believe the Stephen to be Stephen D, son of Armistead. William Payne's son Giles m. Catherine Shelton, dau. of Gabriel Shelton (son of Crispin) and Elizabeth Shepard. It appears these Payne and Shelton families migrated together from Essex, to Middlesex, to Pittsylvania. This reasoning is why I think April Miller listed Thomas Payne m. Frances Shelton as son of William Payne. Miller is very good but does contain errors. Working on Thomas, son of Thomas; all I have for him-Christening: November 19, 1721, Christ Church, Middlesex Co., VA and d. Caswell County, North Carolina. Question to group: Any ideas on parentage of Thomas Payne b.1755 Essex County, Virginia d. November 14, 1819 Pittsylvania Co., VA-will dated who m. Frances Shelton, dau. of John Shelton and Mary Payne?? (again according to Miller). Jan Shelton Nixon...Thankful for all additions and corrections.

I am looking for information on the birthplace of Thomas Walters, who married Lucy Walker ca 1748 (perhaps 1752) in Halifax County, VA (which later became Pittsylvania County). He died before 18 April 1796 in Pittsylvania County, VA, and was a patriot during the Revolutionary War, 2nd Co. His will was of 1795 and was recorded in Will Book 10, page 366. Supposedly his marriage was recorded in the Pittsylvania County marriage bonds page 220; 267 (printed in 1937) to be found in the clerk's office. This marriage liscence supposedly states that his birthplace is Scotland. Thomas Walters acquired around 4400 acres of land in Pittsylvania County during his life time. Please help me if you can with: birthplace or father's place of origin. His father's name was William, I believe. Marjorie Jackson Daub supposedly found a family Bible with some of this information in it. Does anyone know Mrs. Daub or her descendants who might have this Bible in their possession? Thanks, Lila Walters Moorer lmoorer@inu.net

I did not know there was an oath for individual counties. Did you possibly mean the Oath of Allegiance to the USA? If so, it follows and below it is the URL where it can be found. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- OATH OF ALLEGIANCE TO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA "I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state or sovereignty, of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform noncombatant service in the armed forces of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God." Ok group, I need your expert help. I have posted this to several lists, so if you receive duplicates please accept my apology. I am looking for a copy of the above referenced book. Thus far, I have ordered it from ABE, Amazon, Barnes & Nobel and Borders. Each time the book dealers list the book on their site, accept the order and later inform me that the book is unavailable. This has been going on for several months now and I am really getting discouraged. Does anyone have any suggestions why I might find this book? Please advise what book sites you use to find old and used books. I appreciate any suggestions. Thanks ever so much, Pat Johns in Va.

James Coleman ADKINS of Dry Fork, Va b.1845 m. Harriet BURNETT on 10-22-1867. They had 5 children: John Braxton, Emma, William Walker, James Edgar and Urania Virginia. We believe that James Coleman's parents were John and Nancy Adkins and Harriets are Edmund and Mariah BURNETT (also listed as Edward and Maria Burnett?) A Thomas Burnett married an elizabeth ADKINS of the same time. Coleman is a name that has been passed down. I find it interesting that your ADKINS married into a COLEMAN line. Do you see or know of any relationship between our two families? Would be glad to share info.
