    1. Re: [VAPITTSY-L] Orphan's Court Records
    2. I have just returned from a Pittys research trip, the Order books and the Account Books, are replete with guardianship appointments and reports each year of the guardians. Short of going down to the courthouse in person, I think this information would be hard to come by. Don't have a solution for out of towners. regards, Margie Brown

    1. [VAPITTSY-L] GenConnect gateway header
    2. TOM JONES
    3. Dear Norma, The header information that I think you are referring to is created by the GenConnect gateway (we've gotten a number of those today). If a person posts a message to the Pittsylvania County GenConnect bulletin board, it automatically forwards to VAPITTSY-L. The header information, while taking up space, tells us quickly whether the message originated from GenConnect or from a subscriber to VAPITTSY-L. It also tells us the web address for the post, in order that we can find it there and post a response there if we so desire. The kind programmers at RootsWeb designed the gateway and they are the ones who placed the header where it is. I'm fairly certain that this header cannot be altered by me nor the administrator of the Pittsylvania GenConnect bulletin board. However, if you (or any other of us) feel strongly about it, I can file a complaint on your behalf. I must request that any future problems or complaints be addressed to me personally, and not to the mailing list at large (that's what I'm here for). Thanks! Perry (1974), Virginia Genealogist, Vol. 18, No. 2, pp. 136-139, there are nine pages of the 1820 Virginia Census that were not microfilmed. One of those nine pages was from Pittsylvania County. That page included two generations of my direct line, Elijah and Jesse Grubb. (I wondered why they disappeared!) Does anyone know how to get access to the missing page? Here are the Pittsylvania County Heads of Household that are on the missing page (p. 63): Bennett, Stephen Botner, John Brumfield, William Camp, George Dodson, William E. (Note: The article says this name is at the top of the missing p. 63) Douglass, John Eans, Elener Evans, David Grubbs, Elijah Grubbs, Jessee Hairston, Saml. Hodges, Leon P. Holland, Joseph Hopkins, James Jones, Tho. B. McClanaham, Francis Madding, Wm. Pitts, Jessa Raver, John Tally, Peyton Thurman, Nathan Walton, Thomas Watson, John Jr. Do you think you could post this list to the Homepage (apart from the query?) This is a lot of "missing links." According to the article, you could write the General Services Administration in Washington in 1974. But surely they've microfilmed and distributed a reel with these missing pages since then. However, neither the Census Index nor the microfilm for 1820 that I looked at (at the McClung Collection in Knoxville) mentioned this. Nor have I heard/read about this in my research or contact with other Grubb researchers. If there's anyway you could get a copy of this page for me, I'd be happy to transcribe and provide it for you to post. I've also emailed the VA Census Project coordinator with this article reference (it covers seven counties) and asked if she knew about it and/or could provide me with the Pitts. Co. page. Many thanks. Mariea Grubbs Hoy mhoy@esper.com

I am new to this and I could not find anything on the website, I was not sure if I was looking in the right place. Thank you Rhonda Coleman

I've been told that Abraham NEAL (who was married to Ellen SHORT) may be her father but I have found no proof. Sarah NEAL is not listed as a child of Abraham NEAL in the "Beaver Pond Neals of Virginia" book by Carl Neal. In a marriage bond book of Pittsylvania County, I found several other Neals who were also married by the Rev. Griffith Dickinson (who was the minister of Greenfield Baptist Church from 1800-1843 in Gretna, VA). I was hoping maybe someone would recognize one of these other Neals which may be a sibling or relative to my Sarah NEAL. 8 Dec 1829 Andrew CREW and Lucy NEAL. Sur. 3. Isn't the "History of Pittsylvania Co" by Maude Clement still available from the VA/NC Piedmont Genealogical Society. Check the Pittsylvania Co rootsweb page. That's where I got mine. Came quickly, with no problem. Be a bit aware that there are some errors in it. It's a great resource, but go back for primary documentation. Keep in mind that, like many books published in that time, information was gathered from descendants as well as primary sources and memories aren't always that good from generation to generation. Then again, it has some good lists of tithables, etc in the back as well as a lot of good general history. For those families in the northern part of the county, the book is somewhat lacking in information, although there is a tid bit here and there. Just my .02 worth, not that anybody asked. I've just gone down a wrong trail or two following it, but that's true of many genealogy based books. This was meant to be a history book and genealogy in it is a plus, where it's correct. ----- Original Message ----- From: Tom Jones <tomjones@toad.net> To: <VAPITTSY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, September 06, 2000 7:59 PM Subject: [VAPITTSY-L] Clement's History ISBN > Posted on: Pittsylvania Co.
