Hi Linda, On first reading, it appeared to me that your post did skate close to the line of appropriateness, but after reading it a second time I could see that you were basically calling attention to something important being put up for bid. I think actually you did everybody a service by publicizing it. It's important especially because it involved Pittsylvania Co. records. Keep up the good work! Tom [listadmin, VAPITTSY]
Currently the only bidder is the library of VA and I suggest we leave it this way unless the historical society wants it and will make it available online. I would just like to apologize for any confusion which my earlier post created. Apparently I did not make it clear that I was not the owner of those poorhouse documents for Pittsylvania County. In retrospect I can understand how it would have been better to submit the post to the list administrator for approval before posting it. (Perhaps the list owner could have realized what I did not ... that my motive might be suspect ... and suggested that I clarify things.) I am NOT the owner of the document. I volunteer (literally) over 100 hours a month to maintain a non-profit website for the preservation of poorhouse information. I discovered that the document was up for sale on eBay late last night during my routine monitoring of that site for such historically valuable documents. I then spent several hours researching who to contact (and e-mailing several people and two e-mail lists -- VAROOTS and VAPITSY) in an effort to save these documents. I personally cannot GIVE the document to the archives because I don't own it; I cannot purchase it because I try to act in the interests of the preservation of poorhouse records in all 50 states and do not have funds to do so. A reader did direct me to the appropriate person in the Virginia State Library archives; and they are now making every attempt to acquire the document for the public historical record. Again, I apologize for any confusion. Sincerely, Linda Crannell http://www.poorhousestory.com
I have a website called The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com We monitor eBay for the auction of poorhouse records. I want you to know of this document which should be considered a valuable historical record. It is my hope that your state archives (whom I have e-mailed about this) will recognize the value of this document and purchase it for their holdings. But since there is no guarantee of this, I am in a quandry what to recommend to you listers. Hmmm. If you decide to bid on this for yourself (even with the intention of donating it to the state archives or a local depository) you may wind up bidding against each other or the archives. But it sure is my hope that someone who will purchase it for the historical record...to share with the public...will obtain it. Item #452055033 is currently up for bid at http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=452055033 at a starting bid of $49.99 It is described as follows: 1844 POORHOUSE DOCUMENT PITTSYLVANIA CO VA Three page document, 8 x 13", all manuscript in quite legible ink. This is a list of Allowances made by the OVERSEER OF THE POOR for the year 1844 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. "At a meeting of the OVERSEERS OF THE POOR for Camden Parish held at Pittsylvania Courthouse on Monday the 3rd day of June, 1844. . . " PRESENT: Richard T. Walden, William H. Payne, Thomas W.Wooding, A.H. Moorman, Henry H. Ferguson, Jonathan Carter, Edmond Fitzgerald, Samuel Berger, John R. Millner, Sexton W. Smith William H. Buford, and V.O. Witcher. The old document nest gives gives a complete list of all expenditures including: MEDICAL SERVICES CARE OF INDIGENT & POOR COUNTY RESIDENTS MAKING OF COFFINS & BURYING FOOD AND BLANKETS BOARDING & NURSING CARE AND STAFFING OF THE POOR HOUSE VAGRANT WARRENTS, etc. Finally, it list rotating assignments for those present (two at a time) to visit and direct the management of the steward at the county poorhouse. Quite an interesting and ephemeral old document. Some stains, 4" separation at top of spine, 3" separation along middle fold of back page, o/w good condition. There are scans of the documents at the link above. From my personal research with such documents, this looks very authentic. Go take a look! This may be your last and only chance ... if this goes into private hands. Hoping to Preserve Poorhouse History, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)
Re: Oath of Allegiance In May 1777, the General Assembly of Virginia required that all free male inhabitants of the state (sixteen and older) be required to denounce their loyalty to the King of England, and to swear their allegiance to the newly formed United States of America and to the Commonwealh of Virginia.. Have many of these lists survived? Have they been indexed? Jim

Since Meadows/Meador seems to be a good subject right now, I'm looking for information on Pryant Meadows m. Minerva Catherine "Kate" Colbert bet 1875 and 1880. Pryant died 31 Jul 1880 and had one child. Also looking for his parents,Samuel Meadows and martha _. I can find them in the 1850 census. He was an overseer in that census. Does anyone know the parents of Samuel Meadows or his wife Martha_? Samuel seems to have at least the following children in the 1850 census...Pryant J., John, Mary? There is a Samuel Meadows in the 1820 census with four males. Later, in 1854, there is a death notice for a Samuel Meadows with informant listed as wife, Nancy _, Meadows, who states he died of old age. His age is given, making his birth year 1772 Minerva "Kate" Colbert Meadows was my GG aunt.
