    3. Norma, Thus far, I have seen only a handful of reasons why anyone is exempted from taxes in the 18th century in Pittsylvania Co.: 1. advanced age 2. debilitating health 3. mental health problems The Personal Property Taxes were charged and collected separately from Land Taxes (and people who owned land paid both types of taxes). Thus the argument that John Brawner wasn't taxed because he owned land somewhere else doesn't apply to the Personal Property Taxes which the Court Order is referring to. The law mandated that every white male over 21 pay a head tax on himself and any other male that age or older who lived in his household in the county where he resided. Other items of personal property were then taxed (horses, cows, etc) and those items sometimes changed from year to year. Just curious--did John Brawner own land elsewhere? For strength of proof, it would seem the whole argument falls apart on that point alone if the other researcher has no land records to back up their assertion. Good luck; hope you get other responses so we can compare our understanding of these court orders. Melanie Crain

    1. [VAPITTSY-L] Help
    2. I need fresh ideas on how to obtain a photograph of Alonzo Gorrell, of this county. He was my mother's father. He lived and died in Danville, 1891-1938. His brother was John Gorrell Jr, and he was an Insurance Agent (John) as a young man. The family lived on Main St., or at least in the now downtown area of Danville during 1900-1920. I contacted the local church, but no one responds, and all the seniors have all died out, so only people who are researchers in that area would be able to help.

    1. [VAPITTSY-L] help
    2. Sam Stone, a black man, vanished from this county in 1922. He had 4 children and a wife, and a former family at the time. We have not been about to retrace his steps. I have a photo of him, but some of the relatives don't believe it's really him. The story was that Sam was a gambler and a jealous man, and he confronted a man from the Slade Family and killed him about Sam's wife. I've done 10 years of research on this including local researchers, but no sure leads. Help!

    1. [VAPITTSY-L] Court Records?
    2. Norma Thompson
    3. Does anyone have access to the Court Records? I would like to have a look-up to settle a very important issue. Or perhaps just a knowledgeable opinion. I found the following information on a list of Pittsylvania court proceedings: By order dated April 17, 1782 (Book 4, Page 399), John Brawner, "for reasons made known to the court," is exempted from payment of public and county levies in the future. Benjamin Brawner, who lived in Pittsylvania County at this time, had a younger brother, John. Ben's father bequeathed his property to his 3 oldest sons (including Ben) based on the admonition that they would provide for their brother, John, for the rest of his life. I believe that the John who was "exempted from..." is Ben's younger brother. Another researcher is using this record to help prove that John Brawner was in Pittsylvania County and died there after sireing several offspring. The reason given by this researcher for the exemption is that John owned property elsewhere. I don't think you would be exempt from taxes because you owned property elsewhere, and certainly not "...in the future." Can anyone tell me if the reason for the exemption is given in the court records and/or if the exemption would have been given because of property owned elsewhere? Thank you to any kind and/or knowledgeable soul who will help me on this. Norma Thompson

    2. Good morning, I am planning a several days visit to Pittsylvania County. Am interested in the Laurel Grove area, and the addresses of Court houses, Libraries, Va-NC Piedmont Genealogical Society, or anything else that you can think of that would be useful to me in my search. I see on the list the post office addresses, but not the street addresses. We will be coming from Williamsburg. Any suggestions and help will be greatly appreciated. Liz Mingus emingus470@aol.com
