In looking at my notes on William Adams and Frances "Fannie" Meacham, I do see "3. NELLY or NELLIE ADAMS, b. 1797 Pittsylvania Co., VA" This jibes with the Nellie who married Jacob Burton. (Other errors have been found in the work of the person who listed her as the daughter of Isaac Adams.) Since I have not found the parents of Arthur Adams, I was running a sideline looking for more information on Isaac Adams, seeing if they ended up in Floyd/Lawrence Counties, Kentucky. Do you list 'ARTHUR ADAMS, born ca 1786 in Virginia' in any of your data? I found William while looking for Larkin Adams, one of my husband's ancestors. William had a son Larkin, but he is too young to be the one I'm looking for who had a son about 1806. Do you have William Adams' father as Nathan and Ann Adams?

I really don't have any information on them, only questions. Perhaps you can help, and will be kind enough to do so. In trying to find the parents of an early Lawrence County, Kentucky family, Arthur ADAMS and his wife "Peggy" Frances HORN, I found an Isaac ADAMS who may have been Arthur's father. Isaac is reported to have had a daughter Nellie, b. 1797 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, who married September 24, 1816 in Scott County, Virginia to Jacob BURTON. Would you know if this couple came to Kentucky? In the 1850 Census of Lawrence County, Kentucky, in the household of Henderson BURTON (b. ca 1819 in Virginia) there is listed a Nellie BURTON, age 50 born in Virginia. This is possibly Henderson's mother, and possibly the widow of Jacob BURTON. Also listed in the household, in addition to Henderson's wife and child, are three BURTON males: Ira 17, Benjamin 14, Fletcher 24, all born in Kentucky. These males are possibly the children of Nellie, seeming to indicate that she came to KY (with her now deceased husband) between 1819 and 1826. In searching the Tax records, the only Burton in Lawence on the tax records until 1838 was "George L. Burton". In 1838, George L., Jarred, and Detroit are the Burton names listed. There was a JACOB L. BURTON, b. ca 1780 in Virginia; d. ca 1846 in Russell County, Virginia; m. REBECCA BERRY, b. 1785 in Virginia; d. 1860 in Lawrence County, Kentucky. I found no listing of Jacob L. Burton on the tax lists, but did find Rebecca BURTON on the 1846 list and in the 1850 Lawrence County Census. Do you know anything about 1) Jacob Burton who married Nellie Adams in 1816? 2) Nellie Burton listed in the 1850 Census of Lawrence County, Kentucky? 3) Any relationship between Jacob Burton and Jacob L. Burton? 4) Who the George L. Burton was listed in the Lawrence County, Kentucky Tax lists? Any help would be appreciated!

All that means is that Elizabeth was the wife of Richard Gross, and that if Richard had sold it, without her permission, and then died, she was still "owed" 1/3 of that mat of land, or it's worth, no matter what. While a female may not have owned land, in her right, once married, even if she inherited it, she had 1/3 of what ever they owned together, no matter what. A husband could not cut her out of her dower, even if he wrote a will that did so. She had a legal right to challenge the will and get her 1/3 no matter what, and often, they did. So, it only establishes that Elizabeth _ m Richard Gross and they were still married, she was still alive, when it was sold. Other than that, it doesn't help for identifying her. IF she had inherited it, it may have said that they were selling the land, left to her by her father, and she'd still have to relinquish her dower. I"m nor sure, once married, she could have kept it on her own, nor could she have prevented his selling it, except for her 1/3, even if she inherited it. There were rights of dower as well as curtsey.. his right to 1/3. Most of that has left law, though I think there are still certain states and circumstances where rights of dower and curtsey exist. But, I'm not a lawyer, so could be wrong.

Three years later this appears to be the same land, listed as 50 acres lying on the Bannister River "known by the name of Mill Tract being bounded by the Stephens, ? & Devins lines", that Richard and his wife Elizabeth sold to Robert Pierce. During this transaction Elizabeth was examined privately and the deed fully explained to her. At the time the deed was presented in the clerks office the deed states "and of the said Elizabeths relinquishment of her Dower in and to the lands conveyed by the said Indenture heron endorsed admitted to record." With this land being sold in the 2nd deed being listed as part of her dower, I'm wondering if she was related to the Adams that the land was purchased from originally. This is the only hint I have to who Elizabeth's family could possibly be. If anyone could assist with this it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Jerry Taylor
