I have added some additional information that I have found in the census’s, books on Pittsylvania County, etc. At this time, I don’t know if this SHIELDS family is related to my SHIELDS family (William SHIELDS who married Nancy FARMER; their son, James SHIELDS who married Sarah “Sally” NEAL; their daughter, Tabitha SHIELDS, my gr-gr grandmother, who married James Edward ROARK). Surnames: Depriest, Dupriest Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/3AC.2ACE/1463 Message Board Post: In March 1768, the church in Pittsylvania Co., VA, ordered that the children of William Depriest, dec'd, be bound out. However, there is no indication subsequent to that entry of where the children were placed. Does anyone have access to court records from that time that might shed light on this? The mother (Tabitha Toney Depriest) was still living eventually ending up in Henry Co., VA, until ca 1790. Would like to know if the family was split up (five children: Randolph, William, John, James, Elizabeth) or were they allowed to stay with their mother?
Last week someone was asking about Alexander Ferguson. Looking through my files I found the following I copied from a Book called Franklin County Pioneers: "The first person of the name in Franklin County was Alexander Ferguson (1740-1817), who m. Mary, dau. of Capt. Thos. P{arker. His name first appears on a return dated Fort Pitt, March 17, 1778. It lasts appears on a muster roll dated Fort Pitt, April 5, 1778. Bedford County records show he wasliving there April 22,1782. Wjem Franklin was formed, his home was cut off in the new county. He supplied beef for soldiers of the Revolution. Alexander Ferguosn had sisters, Elizabeth, Margaret and Mildred. He mentions nine children in his will. I found a copy of the will that mentions the following: My dear wife Mary Ferguson, my son Thomas Ferguson, my son Noah Ferguson, my son Eli and Daniel Ferguson ( apparently twins), my son Stephen, my Daugher Elizabeth Smith, my daughter Mary Board's children, daughter Martha Donaho and Susanna Short. Alexander Jr. is not mentioned but the Franklin County Pioneers said he was born 1765 and married Nancy Wood, children Thomas, (married Elizabeth Catherine Beaumont) dau. Mary who m. Anthony Simmon. An Old Bible at Redwood names other children of Alexander Ju. as Daniel, James, Thaddeus and Stephen. I guess this isn't the right family for Beverly's Elizabeth and Mary. JoAnn

Correct pronunciation is Can-da'-ce. She was called Da'-cy and Aunt Da'cy hence the Y on the tombstone. Poem by M. J. McGahan Written to Candace (Criswell) Fitzgerald after her husband, Obadiah Thomas Fitzgerald d:2 January 1896 TRIBUTE OF RESPECT Mrs. Fitzgerald: You have felt and know, since last we met, Much sorrow, grief and care, The world had used you badly, My heart has had its share. The one that you loved, has left you, Gone to the still, cold grave, And cruel fate bereft you, Of one that none could save. For his Savior then was calling, "Come thou unto me." Come here, high up Heaven, I have great need of thee. Brighter days and happier hours may come, But we shall even miss, Uncle Obey's smile, his genial face, Amongst our social midst. When the last trumpet is sounded, For all the just ones to appear, In a robe of spotless white, We shall meet his there. With a crown upon his head, Bedecked with jewels rare, With a harp of may strings, Waiting our coming there. When we enter our Father's mansion, A house that's not built by hands We'll welcome Uncle Obey And abide that happy land. Mrs. M. J. Anthony's name appears in at least the personal property tax lists of Pittsylvania County for 1796, 1799, 1801, and 1802 (maybe later also, but I don't have information from post-1802 lists). I don't find Anthony's name in printed indexes to the later federal census returns of Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky, or Tennessee. According to "Holloways of the South and Allied Families," by C. J. Stevens, editor, pub. 1977 by Polyanthos, New Orleans, pp. 617-618, Anthony was one of 7 children born to James Holloway who first purchased land in Pittsylvania County in 1784, being listed there on the 1785 tax list with 10 in his family. One sister to Anthony Collie was Frances Holloway who married April 1791 in Pittsylvania County, VA to John Collie. About 1806, they moved to Caldwell County in western Kentucky. Did Anthony and his wife Anne (Williams) Holloway also settle there? Or where? I am interested to learn of descendants of Anthony and Anne. I am related to her though the Williams family. I do not have additional Holloway records.
