This is a mystery I would love to solve! Any insights would be very much appreciated. Thanks, Steve Donovan

    1. My Robertson/Robinson line
    2. Beverly
    3. I think I am in shock that the information I sent was incorrect. It was not the author of THIS FAMILY ROBINSON that was mistaken, it was my connection to his work. Please help me make the right connection. The marriage bond for Elizabeth Robinson and Anthony P. Lipford was issued on July 25, 1781 in Cumberland County, Virginia. Surety was Creed Haskins. Cumberland County Marriages 1749-1840 by Katherine B. Elliott Sons Daniel, Amos, Fielding On August 15, 1825 William Robinson signed a court document acknowledging that he had a full and final settlement with Anthony P. Lipford on the estate left to him by his grandfather William Robinson. William received payment for the profits of his estate committed to Anthony, and took charge of his own property. Signed: William ROBERTSON Teste: Will Tunstall, Clerk of Court, Pittsylvania County, VA Will of William Robertson, written 19 July 1820 Pittsylvania County D & W Book 11, page 539 names grandson Christopher Organ daughter Dicey Organ Elizabeth Bottom son Christopher's children: WILLIAM, Joseph, Ennis, Peter, Henry, Polly son Henry's children: Polly and Henry 1920 census, Pittsylvania County, VA: William Robertson, 1 male 45 and up and living next door, Anthony P. Lipford My connect to the line seems to me to be that Elizabeth Robinson was the daughter of Field Robinson, Sr. and Obedience Bradshaw of Cumberland County. She named a son Fielding. She named a son Daniel, and a Daniel was the son of Field Robinson, Sr. Elizabeth and Daniel had a brother William Robertson who wrote the will. Field Robinson, Sr. was the son of John Robinson, Sr. and Tabitha Jones of Cumberland County. What do you think? Where did I go wrong? Beverly

    3. Thank you for this information, Mary Leigh. I am so sorry that I may have misled people by posting this information. 2. Hi all, My grandmother Roberta Carter moved with her parents and sister from Amelia County to Ringgold in the 1910's. Her father worked for the railroad, his name was Hiram Lee Carter(1867-1941). Hiram Lee's first cousin, William "Willis" Thomas Carter(1851-1923) had moved to Danville with his family. I am trying to find anyone descended from Willis Carter and his wife, Mary Catherine Jeffress and their 11 children. I know some of their children did not have children, but most of them did. Not only were Hiram Lee and Willis first cousins, but their families were close back then. Thank you. God bless, Beth

    1. DNA study – REED/ REID/ READ/ RIEDT
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Reed Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/3AC.2ACE/1477 Message Board Post: For those who have unfortunately run into a genealogical "brick wall" concerning your Reed/Reid/Read/Riedt ancestor, science and technology has recently provided us with a very exciting and potent tool to aid us in our long-standing quest for identifying our ancestral heritage. To this end, the Reed Y-chromosome DNA Project was launched last year and is now up to twenty participants and counting. So if you, or a male relative of yours (father, husband, brother, cousin, etc.) have the surname of Reed (or any variant spelling), and descend from any of the Reed/Read/Reid/Riedt families of early Pittsylvania Co., VA, then it might be something you’d want to take a look at. Results thus far in the ongoing project are posted at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/reed/. As a sidenote, for any potential participants who may be the least bit concerned about privacy-related issues, these are fully addressed within the links associated with the above web site. And since this international study only deals with a very tiny, and specific, segment of the entire DNA sequence, it can only be used to aid in scientifically confirming the degree of relatedness between the many Reed/Reid/Read, etc. study participants - merely to help us determine which participant we share a common Reed/Reid/Read, etc. ancestor with (if any), and estimate how many generations back this event likely occurred. In fact, this study has already allowed me to eliminate a couple of long-standing, potential Reed ancestors off of my own list, so that I am now able to focus on the remaining potential lines that I've assimilated in my many years of research to date. And obviously, as more and more study results (and hopefully matches, or near matches) come in from worldwide participants, our search can be even further narrowed, thus bringing us closer to scientifically identifying our "true" ancestral line, as well as their country of origin, etc., if we're fortunate. So, by all means, please participate if you can and see the above link for further details. A mere twelve (12) y-DNA marker test should be quite sufficient for now. Best wishes, Bob P.S. The aforementioned web site may also be referenced for a list of all "other" DNA -surname projects (hundreds) presently underway. Check it out; it'll be worth your while.

    1. grandson William Robertson
    2. Beverly
    3. William Robertson, grandson of William Robertson, was the son of Christopher Robertson and Mourning Frances Towler Robertson. In November 1823, Mourning Robertson was appointed guardian of all her children except William, her eldest son. (Pittsylvania County, VA, Court Order Book 24, page 170) Anthony P. Lipford was appointed guardian for her eldest son William Robertson. Anthony was married to his great aunt Elizabeth Robertson. In February 1837 Mourning and her children, including William and wife "Patsy", sold 149 acres on Bannister River to Daniel Lipford. (Pittsylvania County, VA, Deed Book 40, page 23) On page 25 an affidavit by William's wife "Martha", declared that she willfully signed the deed. VA/NC Piedmont Genealogical Society publication Piedmont Lineages Volume XXI, No. 2, 2 May 1999 William Robertson was accused of murdering a Negro woman belonging to Mrs. Martha Griggs and rented out for a year to Mr. James Foulkes, Jun., for $25.00. The case went to court, and William was proved Innocent. He wrote in an article in the "Independent Statesman and Roanoke Commercial Gazette" on 23 July 1830, proving his innocence by quoting affidavits of Elizabeth Beavers, widow of the late Major William Beavers (a wealthy tavern owner), Jun. and Threat James that he was at the Beavers home the day and night of the murder. His grandfather William Robertson had written in his will "it is my ardent wish and desire that my Negroes be treated with utmost humanity", so it does not seem likely that the Robertsons were brought up to be cruel to their slaves.

    3. So our Elizabeth Robinson/Robertson who married Anthony P. Lipford was not a daughter of this William Robertson. She was actually the sister of this William Robertson who wrote the will. Anthony P. Lipford was appointed guardian to William's grandson William. So that grandson would have been Elizabeth's grand-nephew. In November 1823, Mourning Frances Towler Robertson was appointed guardian of all her children except William, the eldest, recorded in Pittsylvania County Court Order Book 24, page 170. 1. Re: [LIPFORD] William Robinson/Robertson

    3. I went through my files this afternoon and found the document "This Family Robinson", written by John E. ROBISON, who wrote that this book is a result of approximately 25 years of research, correspondence, traveling, walking through cemeteries and talking to lots of people. He credits many people with helping him, especially Miss Katherine Reynolds of Houston who wrote "The Robinson Family". He gives permission to copy any or all portions of the book. He wrote that the name Robinson literally means "son of little Robert". The name Robert, from which Robinson derives, comes from the Old High German "bright in fame". The surname Robinson is native to the British Isles. In medieval English records, the name was usually spelled Robynson. In 1324 John and Richard Robynson were entered on the Court Rolls of the Manor of Wakefield in County Yorkshire. Several years later their names appear again on the Subsidy Rolls of neighboring County Lancashire. John Robinson (1617-1681) was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Royalist forces and was made Vice Admiral of North Wales in 1660. Among early emigrants from Britain to America was John Robinson, who was recorded in Virginia in 1662. The Robinson coat of arms has the motto "Propere Et Provide", Quickly and Cautiously". How did Robinson become Robison? The author's grandfather John Elbert Robison, insisted that the correct spelling was Robison, and thus all of his descendants have that name. John E. Robison begins his story with a certain John Robinson who was born about 1694 in the county of Henrico, Virginia. He was probably the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Robinson, and in about 1714 he married Tabitha Scruggs, daughter of Mary Field and Charles Scruggs. There is some question as to whether Tabitha was the daughter of Mary Field and Charles Scruggs or Mary and Edward Jones. Charles Scruggs died in 1718 and Mary later married Edward Jones. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Beverly" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, November 20, 2004 1:43 PM Subject: [LIPFORD] William Robinson/Robertson

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/3AC.2ACE/203.2 Message Board Post: Zachariah Pruitt is my 3rd Gr grandfather and I believe Lucy Owen was from Maryland. Several reasons for this. 1 - Zachariah reached adulthood in Maryland based on his Rev. War pension application. 2 her father-in-law was a witness or appraiser (found this info yesterday online so I'll need to look @ the Frederick Co., MD wills & Administrations) to the Will of a Samual or Samuel Owen 3- my Richardson burial ground in Pittsylvania Co. @ Kentuck is on land originally surveyed by William Owen but I've been unable to find deed of transfer from William that may give relationship. I don't think Lucy was a sister to William or his brother John because the Lucy that was their half sister married my 5th Gr grandfather on my maternal side. Pruitt, Burgess and others who settled near Ringgold were from Maryland, so the answer may lie in Annapolis or Frederick MD. Please let me know if this helps or if you have more. Eric
