Surnames: Adams, Clark, Lynch Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/3AC.2ACE/1248.3 Message Board Post: Mike, As Janet pointed out in her reply, the minutes often read much like Quaker minutes. In following many of my ancestors tracks, many were members of the South River MM and Goose Creek MM in Bedford/Campbell Co's. Eventually, as the issue of slavery and the coming Rev. War separated out sides, I find many of my excommunicated Quakers becoming members of what was then Stinking River Meeting in northern Pittsylvania Co. Reading those minutes can be comical as well, when you find this one and that brought before the members for what, today, we think of as minor infractions. In one case, I found William Dove was to be questioned about his lack of attendance. His reply was that he was the miller and it was milling time. He was busy making flour for many in the "congregation" and thus was excused during that time period. Those minutes are treasures, though little will be gained as far as dates of marriages, births etc. Given those marriages were basically illegal under the Crown, no one was writing them down, to say the least. The Quakers did, but were often -in the more eastern counties- punished for such. Pittsylvania (as well as Bedford/Campbell) was much more tolerant, probably due to the time frame of the formation of the county. The Crown was already losing it's power, especially in that region and many settled out there for that very reason. Your article is quite informative. One addition would be the Stinking Creek meeting (couldn't be named a church, by law) which is now (or became the ) Greenspring Primitive Baptist Church, still standing and recently celebrated thier 200th anniversary as a church by that name. One of my ancestors, Joel Terrell Adams was a Priimitive or Hardshell Baptist Preacher, as was his brother, John Lynch Adams. Joel T Adams performed many marriages after his licensure in 1810 to preach. Just FYI. They are interesting and it's an important part of the past of the county.

Our Bowling family has participated in the DNA study that is being conducted through the Bolling Family Association. We are in Group 6. I am trying to find out if Joseph Bolling married to Rebecca Mattox in Franklin County, VA were my 3rd great grandparents. They lived in the mid to late 1700's. I found them in Bedford County, but believe they lived in Franklin County once it was formed from part of Bedford County. I understand that Pittsylvania County was also a part of that formation. I'm planning a trip to that area March 10-17 and would like to find any potential Bowling/Bolling relatives and share info. My great great grandfather was William Bolling/Bowling (all spellings) married to Julia B. Stiff. They lived in Bedford County. Thank you for any assistance anyone might be able to provide.

    1. Pittsylvania County History Books
    2. Hi, I am new to the list and could use some assistance. I an trying to locate some old history books and biographical sketches of prominemt citizens, published probably in the mid to late 1800's. for Pittsylvania county and the surrounding area, that would be formatted in Adobe Acrobat pdf. The reason I need Adobe is because I am with the US Navy, deploying here shortly for 6 months and I do not have storage room on the ship, yet rather I could keep the Adobe on my laptop computer. I have checked some surrounding counties to no avail. So I thought I would try here. I can receive a 10mb file through here, but anything bigger in size would probably need to be zipped, or even on CD-ROM Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Pittsylvania County Jeffrey US Navy
