Also, I'm looking for a record of Mordecai Sutherland being in Pittsylvania County in the 1750's or 60's. Both of these men are related to George Southerland/Sutherlin. Rebecca, Maybe I should have said, when you get back to Thomas Jefferson who married Mary Field, then go to their other son, Peter Jefferson. His son was the president. President Jefferson's brother, Field Jefferson, is Jathinia's ancestor. I have been reading about this atrocity and it is amazing to me that I'd not heard of it before last year. True history can be so important, in my opinion. I'm known for my strong convictions regarding freedom of religion. I'm hoping someone with knowledge of these families in Pittsylvania will help us out. I cannot find much about the Later Day Saints in that part of Virginia, with the exception of one mention of one minister. I don't have have specific information about your families but I do know quite a bit about the history of the Mormons in Missouri. After the Haun's Mill Massacre, the Saints were confronted by the mobs in Far West. Due to do various circumstances that I won't go into, the leaders of the church were arrested, the town ransacked, and then the Saints were told that they had to leave Missiouri that Winter or they would all be killed. That winter The Saints made a mass exodus across the Mississippi River to Illinois, due to the losses suffered by the people at the hands of the mob, they were in very dire straits. The families you are looking at might have decided to return to Virginia to try and put their lives back together. The majority of the Mormons stayed in Illinois and built a city there called Nauvoo. In 1846, the Mormons, due again to religous persection were forced to a! bandon this city ( the largest in Illinois at that time) and move west to Rocky Mountains of Utah. I hope this helps in understanding your families. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I did relocate some info that could be associated with the move. It is "Haun's Mill Massacre" and I've included a bit about it below. The families who went to MO and then came back to Pittyslvania had these children while in MO. ANDERSON - Joseph born c. 1832, Mary 1840, Stephen 1843 (all shown in 1850 census Pittsylvania) NAPIER - Demarius "Mary" B born c 1840 ( shown in 1850 Pittsylvania census. Nelia Francis b 1843 (shown in 1880 census Patrick Co VA after marrying Shelton). ZIGLAR - John 1833, Susan 1837, Martha 1838 (all shown on 1850 Pittsylvania Co VA census) HAUN'S MILL MASSACRE by Richard and Pamela Price During the 1836-1838 period about twelve thousand Latter Day Saints moved into the nearly vacant Far West area of "Upper Missouri" with the hopes of building a Zionic community, where they could await the time when they would be allowed to return to the Center Place in Jackson County. At first, it seemed that peace and prosperity would bless their efforts, but during the summer of 1838 war broke out between them and the nonmember settlers. The war intensified after the Battle of Crooked River on October 25, 1838, and after Governor Lilburn Boggs issued his infamous "extermination order" on October 27. The settlers throughout Northwest Missouri began to be caught up in a spirit of mobocracy and a determination to banish the Saints, even to the point of shedding blood. Thus it was that while the main army of settlers was gathering at Richmond for an assault on Far West, the Livingston County militia attacked the Saints' village at Haun's Mill. This act on October 30, 1838, proved to be the worst atrocity of the war; it became known as the "Haun's Mill Massacre." Anyone with additional info, please advise. I clearly missed this family in my search. If I ever find any explanation for why these families left for MO and then returned, and whether they did so as a group, I'll definitely post it here. BTW, I think that someone from my NAPIER family married someone named ZEIGLER (maybe a variant of Ziglar?)in the late 18th or early 19th century. I don't remember if it was in Pittsylvania or Franklin County (and don't have my notes with me to check at the moment). Co. to Missouri in the late 1830's/early 1840's, and then returning to Pitts. (or a nearby county)? My NAPIER ancestors did this, and the 1850 census indicates that a number of other families did this as well (I could tell that there were families that were in VA, moved to MO and had children born there, then returned to Pitts., Henry, or Patrick County, VA). I wondered if this was a group move and what prompted them to go and then return. Other families that I found with this pattern included: Anderson, Burnett, Clark, Greer, and Minter (plus Napier, written as "Napper" in the 1850 census). Anyone have any clues or info on this? Many thanks, Allison Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The Son of Edmond Fallin/Fallen etc. Redmond was the Grandson of Redman Fallen/Fallon/Fallin/Falling ... the one who made his home on sandy creek of Dan river in 1745. The Grandson Redmond Fallin (The Son of Edmond) let's just call him Redmond the 2nd or Redmond 2. Redmond-2 married Elizabeth Gwin in 1793 (her father was George Holmes Gwin) They had a son named Littleberry Falling (Fallin etc.) Littleberry Fallin(g) was born in Pittsyl Co. 1806 and married Ann Elizabeth Townes in 1829. Littleberry and Annie were in Maury County Tennessee (just south of Columbia TN) by 1840, they had a son named Edward Townes Fallin who was in the CSA Army by 1862 and was a P.O.W. by 1865 and was "paroled" at Jacksonport (Jackson County Arkansas). Military record says he enlisted in Augusta (in Woodruff Co. Arkansas). Edward Townes Fallin married Julia Lou Simmons in Dec of 1866, and had several children, one of which was my great Grandfather "George Minor Fallin Sr.) born near Weldon, Arkansas (Jackson County) in Nov. of 1888. I hope this clears up the Fallin/Fallen etc. & Quinn/Gwin Connection. Sincerely, Lance T. Fallin Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
