    3. In was common for Jr to be given to the younger person of same name in the family, and even the neighborhood, in 19th century. Middle names were not common so Sr and Jr were used instead of M.I. to differentiate the two. Richard Jr, could be a nephew, grandson, brother-in-law or even unrelated. Since the census taker visited first one, then the other. The two Richards are in the same neighborhood. Probably related in some way, though not necessarily so. Check out naming patterns.
