The clerks of the county have been: John COX, 1777-1808 31 yrs. Waller REDD, 1808-1825 17 " Sanford REAMEY, 1825-1831 6 " A. M. DUPUY, 1831-1845 14 " Jerry GRIGGS, 1845-1864 19 " George D. GRAVELY, 1864-1869 5 " T. E. DONEGAN, 1869-1870 1 " George D. GRAVELY, 1870-1875 5 " J. H. MATTHEWS, 1875-1887 12 " Reelected in May, 1887, for six years. Served until 1912. Thomas C. MATTHEWS was elected in 1912, and is now (1932) the clerk of the Henry Co. Court. Clerks of Patrick Co. from the time of it's separation from Henry Co. in 1791. Samuel STAPLES, 1791-1826 34 yrs. Abram STAPLES, his son, 1825-1852. In 1844, he resigned the clerkship of the circuit court and was succeeded in the latter by his son, Samuel G. STAPLES. Samuel G. STAPLES held the office from 1844-1852. Abram STAPLES, nephew of Abrah STAPLES above mentioned, was circuit clerk from 1852-1869 17 yrs. He was removed by military authority and John ANGLIN appointed. John L. ANGLIN held the office to Jan 1, 1871. Henry TUGGLE (county court), 1862-1869 Larkin G. RUCKER (county court), 1871-1887 Thomas CLARK (circuit court), 1970-1871. When the amended constitution went into effect Larkin G. RUCKER, having been elected clerk of the county court, became ex officio clerk also of the circuit court and continued as such to 1887. Charles Reade MARTIN followed Larkin G. RUCKER. John S. TAYLOR was next elected, at the expiration of whose term T. Lee CLARK became clerk. John S. TAYLOR was again elected and is the present incumbent (1935).
