Here are some Patrick Co., VA records from my PENNINGTON research: The following was provided from Viola Pennington - Ell: Dr. Isaac Pennington's fathers name was John Pennington who lived and died in England (this is verbal info. from relatives). Dr. Isaac was born in England and came to America to seek his fortune. He lived in Lycoming, PA, N.C., and PATRICK CO., VA. He married Agnes (Brown) Martindale. The marriage certificate was seen by a relative who has lost track of it. The original was found in the town of Blackburg, near Radford, VA. They were married at Dunkard's Bottom, VA (now under water), but I understand all the records were moved to Blacksburg, VA. No proof. Henry Co., VA (later Patrick Co., VA) Land Grants and Patents (obtained from Jim Pennington 3/18/96): Book K, page 339, #558. Richard Davidson, 28 Feb 1784, 113 acres on the branches of Elk Creek. Abstracts of Henry County, Virginia Deed Books III & IV shows "p. 32-33: 20 Jan 1789, Isaac Cloud of Surry County, NC to Isaac Pennington of Henry County, VA for the sum of thiry pounds sells and conveys to Pennington 167 acres of land in Henry County on Elk Creek adjacent to the lines of Marr and Hanby." There was a land transaction between Jacob Fulk and Joseph Pennington in Surry County, 9 Dec 1809 made in the presence of Henry Lamb and Jacob Smith. The 1812 tax list of Surry County North Carolina shows Joseph Pennington with 460 acres and one white poll; Isaac Pennington with 349 acres and one white poll; and Henry Lamb, Sr. with 100 acres and no white poll. Apparently Grace Martindale's family stayed in Patrick County. The 1810 tax records for Patrick County, Virginia show Daniel, John and William B. Martindale and Isaac Pennington on the same page. Back in the 1787 tax records of Virginia, several Penningtons, including an Isaac were listed in Bourbon County which was a large part of what was to become eastern Kentucky. That countie's tax list also had William Anderson, William Lamb, and Jeremiah Dunn. Perhaps Joseph and Grace were even married in Kentucky? Daughter Sarah Lamb's 1880 census record says her mother was born in Maryland and her father was born in North Carolina. The 1830 Indiana Census shows Joseph Pennington and Joseph, Jr. on page 157 and Samuel on page 165 of Greene County. In the 1840 census Joseph Pennington (Jr.) is listed in Monroe County on page 104 along with Alexander and John W. Lamb, while Samuel Pennington is on page 80 and Willis Lamb is on page 82. Land records for Indiana show that a Joseph Pennington had land in Lawrence County in 1831. Samuel Pennington had a land transaction in 1836, the same year the Joseph Pennington estate was settled. Patrick Co., VA information from our BROWN research: Patrick Co., VA Revolutionary War Soldier in Peter Hairstons Company listed... William BROWN. (Could possibly be a relation to Agnes Brown) I have a hunch that the records of the below Augustine Brown who resided in Patrick Co., VA, is the father of the Agnes Brown. But unproven at this time. Henry Co. Page 170, Book X Augustine Brown, purchased 320 acres on 2 Dec 1785, on the branches of Little Peter's Creek, adjoining Lawson's, etc. Martindale research: Lawson Oliphant's younger sister Nancy married another Martindale, Andrew, who was born 15 Mar 1824 in Patrick County, Virginia which bordered Surry County, North Carolina on the north. There were no Martindales in the available early census records for Virginia, but they are in the 1810 tax list for Patrick County. * * * Apparently some of Daniel Martindale's family stayed in Patrick County. The 1810 tax records for Patrick County, Virginia show Daniel, John and William B. Martindale and Isaac Pennington. This was apparently Daniel Martindale, III because his children's births and marriages indicate he stayed in Patrick/Surry. It could be that the Isaac Pennington was Joseph's father. This would make Joseph an uncle of the Grahams who married Willis Lamb's brothers Alva and Samuel. The published marriage register for Patrick County did not show Grace's marriage. It could have been unrecorded, especially if it was a Quaker marriage, or they may have married in North Carolina. However, Daniel may have gone as far as Alabama. The following land transaction is recorded: * * * I hope this helps someone. Melinda Pennington
