Terri, I found a Franklin Pierce Shelor in Floyd Co., VA who is noted in 1860 as David F. (may be Daniel, a common Shelor 1st name) which really threw me. I sent off a quick note to my Shelor cousin/expert & her response is noted below. I have to wonder how many of us would change our names if it weren't such a hassle? Something to keep in mind I guess! Barb R. "Franklin was Franklin Pierce, as far as I know. I never heard him called anything else. They pronounced it "Purse" in the old days. But your David F. looks like he must be Franklin. Wonder if Lucy just found a name she liked better than David. David isn't a popular name in the early family history. And there weren't any legal reasons to keep them the same. My Aunt Lilla thought that she was Lilla Gertrude most of her life, but when she checked her mama's Bible she discovered that she had been originally named Lilla Something-or-other-Hawaiian Queen. Her brother-in-law, born much later during the time of birth certificates, had a terrible time Proving who he was because his birth certificate says he's Nelson, but he's been Erdman all his life! Ditto another cousin, born one name and living another all her life. Makes it interesting for all of us genealogists!" > -----Original Message----- > From: Wayne Grote [mailto:wgrote@wesnet.com] > Sent: Wednesday, November 04, 1998 5:51 PM > To: VAPATRIC-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: NANCY NOLEN (1814-1886) > > > > -----Original Message----- > From: Barb R. <poohpah@email.msn.com> > To: VAPATRIC-L@rootsweb.com <VAPATRIC-L@rootsweb.com> > Date: Wednesday, November 04, 1998 4:45 PM > Subject: RE: NANCY NOLEN (1814-1886) > > > >Shelby, > >I only have the names & Appr. bith dates for Nancy's parents. > >Richard Nolen b. c1774 & Mary Burnett b. c1788 m. 6-30-1796 PCVA. > >Barb R. > > > >I have the spelling of Nancy's name as Nowlin.
