    1. Joseph MOLES
    2. Dear List-- Although I am completely new to the Patrick County List, I have scads of family history in the County. I have a serious delimma at the moment. My SAR application has been put on hold because I have been told I need more documented proof that Joseph MOLES was indeed the son of Jeremiah MOLES, SR. Is there possibly anyone on this list that might have a family Bible, a death certificate, marriage certificate or deed or will or any other document that will prove this relationship to the satisfaction of the SAR. This is what I know: Jeremiah MOLES, SR. married on July 18, 1776 in Chesterfield County, Virginia Lydia (Lydda) SMITH daughter of Richard and Hannah SMITH. Jeremiah and Lydia moved to Patrick County, Virginia about 1800 as his name is first included in the personal property tax lists for the year 1801. His name continues on those tax lists through the year 1825 when it is assumed that he must have died in Patrick County. I can prove that Jeremiah was the father of John MOLES and Jeremiah MOLES, Jr. and I know that Joseph MOLES was their brother, but I have no definite proof except a 1975 DAR application listing these three children for Jeremiah, Sr. I am told that DAR application is not proof enough because that information was "not substantiated" on that application. Joseph MOLES was born about 1777, probably in Rockingham County, Virginia. The name of his wife is not known as I have never located a marriage record for him--I do know that her name was "Jane" because on my great great grandmother's death certificate her parents are listed as Joseph and Jane MOLES. "Jane" must have died before 1842 because she was not named in her husband's will. Joseph MOLES made his will on February 23, 1842 (Patrick County Will Book 3, Page 240--I have a copy of this will.) His bequests included three shillings each to his grandchildren, Jeney Ann and Sally BRANCH; one dollar each to sons Samuel MOLES and James MOLES; one dollar to daughters Nancy BOLLING (my gg grandmother) and Mary MOLES; and the entire balance of his estate to daughter Caty MOLES who never married. Joseph died between Feb. 23 and the October term of Court in 1842. To my knowledge there is no death record in Patrick County--If someone could find one I would be thrilled, especially if it listed Jeremiah--or Lydia as a parent. I would appreciate it very much if everyone would make a search of their data banks to see if you have anything on my Joseph or my Jeremiah MOLES. Carlisle Bowling P. O.
