Truman, I am descended from John Crafty Griffith and Sparrel Tyler Griffith and have been researching this line since I started my genealogy research about 10 months ago. I have not been able to find John Crafty's parents either, but I've made some progress on the down line families. This has been a tough nut to crack. Where do you fit into the tree? My line goes like this: John Crafty Griffith, Sparrel Tyler Griffith, William David Griffith, William Howard Griffith, Marvin Curtis Griffith, and me, Marvin Curtis Griffith, Jr. aka Sonny Griffith. Last summer I was found on the internet by another Griffith researcher and learned that there was a Griffith reunion held each year at Griffith Valley in Patrick County, VA. This group is descended from Sparrel Tyler Griffith > Charles Jefferson Griffith > Frank Griffith. Sparrel Tyler is buried at Griffith Valley along with his second wife Lucinda Thomas. In the handouts they provided me at this reunion, the information indicated John Crafty Griffith married Martha Griffith, daughter of Daniel Griffith, rather than Martha Ingram Campbell. I have subsequently verified this by comparing the age of John's wife Martha in the 1850 and 1860 Patrick County censuses. The confusion comes about because there are three marriages listed in the marriage records of that time, two of a John Griffith marrying a Martha Griffith and one of a John Griffith marrying a Martha Campbell. The Martha Griffith marriages were in 1830 and 1832 and the one with Martha Campbell was in 1833. If you look at the age of John Crafty Griffith's oldest child, you can see that Martha Campbell would not be his wife (unless he got her pregnant well before they were married) I subsequently found the other John Griffith that was married to a Martha who happened to be the right age for Martha Ingram Campbell. So we are dealing with at least two John Griffiths, if not three, that were married about the same time. Would love to compare notes and share info with you.
