Notes for WILLIAM COCKERHAM: Sources: Bodie's Historic Southern Families Vol 3 p184 William Cockerham's will probated 13 May 1669 In the records of the Heralds' Visitation to Dorset in 1623, William registers his pedigree, going back three additional generations, and the earliest generation (circa 1500) is in Devon. This William migrated alone to virginia in1637 at age 44. He is listed as William Cockrum on the ships' records of the Robert Ealy. He later brought over a daughter, Mary, who was a spinster. In 1656 he patented 1230 acres of land in Surry co., Virginia. He held offices in the Surry Regiment from Lieutnant to Colonel but he seems to have been more or less permanently known as "Captain." He was Burgess for two terms in 1663 and 1665 when he was 70 and 72 years old. Surry co., land book L pg. 105 shows that the 1230 acres of land to have been on the SW side of the James river in Surrey co. and says 1100 acres part hereof being formerly granted by patent unto Mr. Spencer, and due to the said Wm. Cockerham as marrying the daughter of the said Spencer, and 130 acres the residue being due by and for the transportation of three persons into the colony. February 26, 1656. Virginia, and died April 05, 1816 in Morgan co. Georgia. Notes for BENJAMIN COCKERHAM: Benjamin Cockerham was born ca. 1750 in Lunenburg co., Virginia, the son of John Cockerham. He was NOT the Benjamin Cockram who served in Capt. Charles Polk's Co. of North Carolina militia. However, he did see some sort of service. On May 14, 1782, again living in Mecklenburg co., he laid claim to a rifle taken to war and not returned, and for 235 cwt. of beef furnished the Continental Army. Mecklenburg records call him a "patriot." [Revolutionary War Records, Mecklenburg co., Virginia, O.B.5, pg 145-147] Known to have lived in South Carolina after the war, but he died in Morgan Co., Georgia, nephew Matthew Cockrum of Morgan co. being his executor. The will was drawn the 23of August 1815 and entered for record 11January 1818. Benjamin having died somewhere between those two dates. His wife's name is unknown but she died before he did. Benjamin's heirs were sons John, Benjamin II, Banister, and James, and grandsons Samuel Paskill, Marvill Kelley, George Brooks and Robert Brooks. Benjamin's son John was born before 1790 in Mecklenburg co., Virginia and inherited Benjamin's home place in Morgan co., Georgia, and one-fourth of his land. So far the correct John Cockrum has not been identified from the many on record. Benjamin's son Benjamin II, also inherited a quarter of his father's land. His second wíÇe, married in 1816, was Nancy Collins. His first wife;s identity is unknown.
