    3. You may already know this, but, Stuart is the County Seat. Taylorsville was the old name of the town. After the Civil War, Taylorsville was renamed Stuart in honor of the Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart, who was a Patrick Co. native. His father, Archibald Stuart was married to the daughter of William Letcher who was killed by a Tory in 1780. Archibald Stuart & family moved to the Letcher homeplace on the Ararat river and this is where J.E.B. Stuart was born.
