We are currently compiling the Patrick County Heritage Book Volume II. This is a book on the people, places, and things of Patrick County. The stories come from the public and is therefore from a personal perspective and is full of genealogy. You will find stories on our Pioneers and Families as well as our old Post Offices, Schools, Clubs, Businesses no longer in business, traditions, folklore, etc. Volume 1 had 429 pages and was the very first time ever that the public had been invited to participate in such a project. I think that's the reason I enjoy it so much is that is does have that personal touch from personal experience and of course the family genealogies that have been passed down. Check out our website at: http://www.myvirginiaheritage.com/heritage_books/patrick_county2.htm The deadline for story submissions is May 20th. If you had an ancestor in the county before 1840, you can do a Pioneer story---500 words and 1 picture free. For any ancestor in PC after 1840, or if you are a descendant of a Patrick Countianian, a newcomer to PC, or a former resident of PC, you can write a free 500 word Family Story and put one picture with it. We are also doing a Veterans section for the Topical Part of which you can do a 100 word story and put a picture with it (from Revolutionary War to the current Iraqi Freedom, or even if they just served in the military but no war), and we're doing some other special topical sections on Music, Agriculture, and Old Homes. We want anything having to do with music from our musical groups to how instruments are made. Agriculture we want anything having to do with agriculture from farm implements to farming, to beef cattle, dairy cattle, beefarming, sheep, poultry, swine, blueberries, strawberries, tobacco, vineyards, tobacco barns, curing tobacco, growing fodder, etc. Old homes we want pictures of old homes that are currently standing or no longer standing. Tell us who built these old homes, how and what were they built out of, who lived there, etc. This includes the old log cabins and homes that had the breezeways. Any of these stories can be 250 words and put a picture with it---we don't care how many of these you write. Hope this helps to answer some of your questions. Let me know if I can help you further.
