All, Shooting Creek at one time was noted for being a mighty mean place. In "The Man Who Moved a Mountain" the area is described as 2nd meanest, the meanest being Buffalo Mountain. The creek starts in Floyd County flows through Franklin (there is a bridge across it on Route 40 a mile or so before the Patrick County Line), and flows into Smith River in Patrick County about a mile above White Falls and eventually Philpott Lake. There were some Rakes families that lived along that creek at one time and some also that lived within a couple of miles. Otter, Tharp are not that far from Shooting Creek with another large creek between them Runnet Bag (which starts at Smart View on the Blue Ridge Parkway.) There is a very beautiful large brick house on top of a hill in Patrick County not far from the border w/ Franklin. At one time this was owned by a family with last name of Rakes. Not sure on the connection. These are my old stomping grounds. I will ask my father in a week or so if he knows anything about this family. Clyde - I would love to know the Rakes - Brammer connection. If you find out anything about them please let me know.
