It is, indeed, exciting when family lore about Indian ancestry turns out to be true. Those who have such a family legend might be interested to know that there is a genetic test to estimate what percentage of one's ancestry is Indian, European, African, or East Asian. It is offered by _www.ancestrybydna.com_ (http://www.ancestrybydna.com) , and unlike the more common test of the Y chromosome, it works for both men and women. Note, however, that it is probably not reliable if Indian ancestry is less than about 1/32; for example, if only one 4th or earlier great grandparent was full-blooded Indian. With each passing generation the percentage of Indian ancestry is reduced by half, so this might well be the last generation for which the test will prove useful. Charles Leon Harris
