While eagerly awaiting the pilgrimage to the Wood’s Gap Cemetery being conducted by Truman Adkins on the 29th, I became curious about the people buried there. It turns out that not surprisingly many were descendants of Father Dickey Wood, but others appear to have been just neighbors from both sides of the Floyd-Patrick border. Here are the records made by O. E. Pilson on 11 April 1977 in all caps, followed by a brief summary of what I found in census and other records. Daughter of Edward and Mary Cockram. Date of death probably incorrect, as it is before Dickey’s marriage to Fannie Brammer. First child, Henry, born 1798 in Franklin County. FANNIE BRAMMER WOOD, WIFE # 2, NO CHILDREN. DIED 30 AUG. 1830. Married in Patrick County 8 Sep 1823. ELIZABETH DEHART WOOD, WIFE # 3, MOTHER OF 4 CHILDREN: PRESTON, JACKSON, DOLLIE, LUCINDA. SHE DIED 26 OCT. 1838 Probably daughter of James and Catherine DeHart. First child born about 1832. GRIFFITH, B. 1877 ; D. 1958 * (M) CLARA WHITE GRIFFITH, B. 1883 ; D. 1960 * The Patrick County birth register says Richard A. Griffith was born 26 Sep 1878 to Artensa Griffith, and the 1880 census for Smith River District of Patrick County lists Richard A. Griffith age 1 in the family of Sparrell F. and Artemesia [Hall] Griffith. According to the 1900 Patrick County, Smith River District census, Clara White was born June 1882, daughter of Alexander and Bettie A. White, and still single. She married Richard A. Griffith before 1920. JOHN B. COCKRAM, B. 1880 ; D. 1887 Born in Patrick County on 10 June 1880 to Gabriel A. and Lurinda A. Cockram, who lived in the Smith River District of Patrick County. Gabriel A. Cockram was the son of Richard and Judith Ann Wood Cockram. Richard was the son of David Preston and Anna Wood Cockram, and Judith Ann Wood was the daughter of Jeremiah and Mary Ann DeHart Wood. Both Anna and Jeremiah Wood were children of Richard and Rachel Wood. HENRY COCKRAM, B. 31 JULY, 1872 ; D. 21 NOV. 1874 Probably son of William H. and Millie Jane Cockram, below. WILLIAM H. COCKRAM, B. 1 JAN. 1843 ; D. 15 DEC. 1936, CO. D, 51 VA. INF. C. S. A. William Harvey Cockram was the son of David Preston and Anna Wood Cockram, mentioned above. He lived in Floyd County. MILLIE JANE DEHART, WIFE OF WM. H. COCKRAM, B. 30 MAY, 1847 ; D. 13 FEB. 1941 Daughter of James Wilson and Rebecca Jane Martin DeHart. DAVID COCKRAM, CO. D, 51 INF. C. S. A. (NO DATES) Born about 1845 to David Preston and Anna Wood Cockram (see above). David married (1) Ellender Cannaday, daughter of Constant and Elizabet Cannaday (see above), before 1870, and (2) Iowa A. Griffith 29 July 1888. Iowa A. Griffith was the sister of Richard A. Griffith Cockram, widow of David, in the 1920s, and in the 1930 census they were in Floyd County, Court House District, south end. NELDA SUE MCALEXANDER, B. & D. 12 OCT. 1949 ELBERT MCALEXANDER, B. 17 AUG. 1900 ; D. 28 APR. 1920 Possibly James E. McAlexander, son of Jessie A. and Mary E. McAlexander (see below). MARY G. MCALEXANDER, B. 1879 ; ——————— * According to the 1930 census Jesse A. and Mary E. ? were married in the 1890s and lived in Floyd County Court House District, south end. JOHN JEFF D. WOOD, B. 13 SEPT. 1867 ; D. 25 APR. 1943 & SELINA SALMONS, B. 12 FEB. 1872 ; D. 5 JULY, 1959 & Jefferson D. Wood was born in West Virginia to John B. and Lucy A. Wood (see below). He married (1) Malinda A. ? about 1889, then Salina E. P. Salmons before 1920. Salina E. P. Salmons was listed as a daughter age 8 of Joseph and Lethanda B. Salmons in the 1880 census for the Smith River District of Patrick County. In the 1930 census John Jeff and Salina lived in the Smith River District of Patrick County. ALVIN HARMON WOOD, B. 26 AUG. 1915 ; D. 12 NOV. 1940 Son of John Jeff D. Wood and his first wife Malinda. LOUCINDA A. WOOD, WIFE OF JOHN B. WOOD, B. 14 JULY, 1840 ; D. 26 NOV. 1913 Possibly Lucinda A. Cannaday daughter of Constant and his first wife Sarah (see above), last recorded with her parents at age 19 in the 1860 Patrick County, Smith River District census. JOHN B. WOOD, B. 1839 ; D. 7 MAR. 1907, AGE 68 YRS. GONE SOLDIER Born in Indiana and therefore probably the son of Henry and Nancy Bryant Wood. Henry, first child of Richard and Rachel, left Patrick County in the 1830s and settled in Sullivan County Indiana. John B. Wood married Loucinda around 1864, and they settled in the Smith River District of Patrick County before 1870. MARY E. WOOD, D. 28 JUNE, 1897; AGE 89 YRS.
