In previous postings I noted that two William Harrises lived along the headwaters of Smith River in Patrick County in the 1815, suggesting that they were related to each other. One of these William Harrises was born about 1790 and married Elizabeth Hylton in 1814. DNA results shows that he was related to an earlier William Harris who lived in the same area and died before 1790. This deceased William Harris and his wife Sarah had a son named William who, along with Sarah and siblings, signed a deed in 1796. It has generally been assumed that the William who signed the deed was the one who married Elizabeth Hylton, but the latter William would not have been of legal age in 1796. Therefore it appears that there were three generations of William Harris in that family: William I, who married Sarah and died before 1790 William II, his son William III, born about 1790 and married Elizabeth Hylton Little is known about William II, and there is no direct evidence regarding the father of William III. However, because the brothers of William II are either well documented or were married after William III was born, I assume that William III was the son of William II. Further information about the existence and family of William II can be inferred from marriage records, especially from the names of ministers performing ceremonies. Because these Harrises lived in a remote part of the county in the foothills of the Blue Ridge, it can be assumed that they used the services of local ministers. Indeed 17 Harris marriages were performed by two Primitive Baptist ministers, Elder Robert Jones and his son Elder Jesse Jones, who lived near these Harrises. Most of the Harrises married by the Joneses have already been linked to William I or to William III, but the following have not been previously connected to this Harris family: Patsy Harris, dau. of William Harris m. Elkin Pedigo on 20 Sep 1805. Elizabeth Harris, dau. of William Harris m. David Edens on 25 Sep 1813. Who was the William Harris mentioned as the father of Patsy and Elizabeth in their marriage records? William I is not known to have had a daughter named Patsy (or its equivalent, Martha), and his daughter Elizabeth married Samuel Hylton in 1797. William III would have been too young to be the father of daughters married in 1805 or 1813. This means that the father of Patsy and Elizabeth was probably William II. On 28 July 1809 Elder Jesse Jones also married Sarah Tuggle to a William Harris who has not been previously identified. I propose that this was a second marriage for William Harris II.
