    1. Misfiled Revolutionary Pension application of William Harris
    2. While researching the Revolutionary War record of my ancestor, William Harris, I found in the pension application of his widow the application of a different William Harris. Anyone looking for the application by the latter William Harris would not be likely to find it except by chance, and someone researching the husband of Lydia may inadvertently copy data for the wrong William Harris. Here is a summary for the two William Harrises: My William Harris was born to William and Sarah Harris on the James River in Cumberland County VA on 25 Aug 1755. The family then moved to Buckingham County VA, where William entered service in the Militia in May of 1776. In the early 1780s the family moved to Henry County, where William married Lydia. The part of Henry County where they lived became Patrick County in 1791. In the 1820s William, Lydia, and their youngest son moved to Barren County KY, where William filed his pension application in 1833. He died in 1838, and Lydia applied for a widow’s pension in 1839. In Lydia’s file is the pension application of a William Harris who stated that he was born in London in August of 1845 and came to America in 1769. In 1776 he was living in Augusta County VA, where he entered service in the Mili tia. After the war he moved to Bourbon County KY where he filed his pension application in 1832. There is no mention of family members. This filing error must have occurred early, because officials in the Pension Department were also confused: they awarded Lydia’s estate the larger pension that was due to the second William rather than to her husband. I am transcribing both pension applications and will be glad to send one or both of them to anyone who requests by email (off the list). Charles Leon Harris
