    1. World War I Draft Registration Cards
    2. Just thought I would pass this on to my fellow researchers. Ancestry.com has a fantastic database that I just recently found that has been beneficial in identifying many of my ancestors. It not only gives their names, date of birth, current address, their height, color of eyes and color of hair, but in many cases their father, mothers or wife's name and address and in some cases, their place of birth. The following is the description of the database. "In 1917 and 1918, approximately 24 million men living in the United States completed a World War I draft registration card. These registration cards represent approximately 98% of the men under the age of 46. The total U.S. population in 1917-1918 was about 100 million individuals. In other words, close to 25% of the total population is represented in these records." "The WWI draft registration cards database can be an extremely useful resource because it covers a significant portion of the U.S. male population in the early twentieth-century. If you had family in the United States during WWI, you are likely to find at least one relative’s information within this large collection. In addition, these cards contain more than just names and dates; they contain significant genealogical information such as birthplace, citizenship status, and information on the individual’s nearest relative." 3. This weekend... THE 2005 CHARLIE AND CORA WEST FAMILY REUNION Noon, Sunday, August 28, 2005, Meadows of Dan, VA COMMUNITY CENTER In past years, we heard wonderful stories written by our "storyteller," Shirley Cochran Freeman, about life at the old West family home. We have had special music presentations. Perhaps we will have both again this year. In addition to a covered dish to share, let's each bring something for "show and tell"...a picture, picture album, scrapbook, letter, card, trophy, tool, certificate...something related to Meadows of Dan, to the West family and its genealogy, or something just interesting to you. We all know that West folks are notorious for their shyness, so "show" without the "tell" will be fine!! And, bring a musical instrument and play a little. For more information, please send me an email ***off list***. ### Bernie Hylton hyltonbg@earthlink.net New and improved US58 Walk Website: http://homepage.mac.com/hyltonbg/Menu4.html

    1. Re: [VAPATRICK] William and Saluda Doss Harris
    2. Charles, Yes, I found that 1860 census record and that is my William and Saluda (Saludy, Loudi, Roda, Boda) Harris. But it was great when Kenney Kirkman found them in the 1870 Stokes Co., NC census. It just happens that Kenney is a descendant of Saluda's brother Joel and he had Drury Mays, father-in-law of Joel, in Patrick Co. and knew that they were on the line between Patrick and Stokes in Nettle Ridge. I still am looking for the death of William, but at least I now know where to begin looking for that. I am hoping to make a trip to Danbury, Stokes Co., NC and see what I can find on Joseph S. and William R., the two other sons of William and Saluda. Hopefully I will also find William's death and maybe even a 2nd marriage for him. I can't imagine him trying to raise 3 boys by himself. Pat

    1. Re: [VAPATRICK] William and Saluda Doss Harris
    2. Nice find, Pat. I was wondering if you ever found William and Saludy in the 1860 census. There is the following entry that could be them if one is willing to believe yet another first name for Saludy: Southern Dist., Patrick County VA 20 Aug. 1860 p. 84 609 601 William Harris 24 Farm laborer $10 personal estate VA Roda 26 VA If this is your William, the age of 45 in the 1870 census must be off by a decade. But this age of 24 agrees with the age given in the marriage record. The age for "Roda" also agrees with the age of Saludy in the marriage record. Charles Leon Harris

    1. William and Saluda Doss Harris
    2. Thanks to a descendant of the Doss/Mays line, I have finally found my ancestor, William Harris and Saluda Doss Harris in the 1870 census. They were in Stokes County North Carolina as proven by the 1870 Census for the Peters Creek Township. I have also found out that William and Saluda had not one son, but three. The 1870 Census of Stokes Co., NC, Peters Creek Township references William Harris, age 45, Loudi, age 35, George W., age 10, Joseph S.,age 8 and William R., age 4. Saluda (Saludy, Loudi) Doss Harris died in 1871 and I have always wondered who took care of George after her death. Now that I have two additional siblings maybe I can finally climb over my "brick wall". George Woodson Harris is in the 1880 Census with his wife Alaminta (Allie, Alice) Rogers in Patrick Co. (married 1879). I am told that the Peters Creek Township section of Stokes County, NC borders southern Patrick County at what is today known as the Moorefield Store area. Many years ago this section of Patrick County was known as the Nettle Ridge area. Drury S. Mays (informant of Saluda's death) lived in Nettle Ridge. I was previously advised that William Harris, b. abt 1835, moved to and died in Kernersville NC, but I have been unable to locate his death. Now I am now trying to locate anyone who is connected to this Joseph S. Harris, b. abt 1862 and William R. Harris b. abt 1866 in VA, (probably Patrick Co., Va.) Any information will be greatly appreciated. Pat C. Johns in Va.
