I agree wholeheartedly with you. If I could just locate my great, great grandfather I would be so happy and that is my focus until I get too old to do this anymore. Leon, Congratulations on your find. Yes, DNA is a wonderful tool in locating those long lost ancestors. I know that certain things weren't talked about in past generations and it really makes it hard on those of us who are trying to trace our ancestors. I have an aunt who was a product of rape and only three people could identify the father of my aunt. Her mother (my grandmother), her grandfather (my gr. grandfather) and the relative who assaulted my grandmother. We will never know who this relative was. Pat C. Johns in Va.
Wilma, tell me more about your DeHart book. I must have been sleeping when you came out with it. As I have told Wilma separately, I don't think any harm can come from revealing the secret of my grandfather's DeHart father at long last. I'm sure my late father, and probably my grandfather, would feel more connected if they knew of this additional family. Leon
Leon, I am so happy for you. Yes the YDNA is a good tool. I am sorry about the death of your mother. I just found out the other day, else you would have received a card. I will write you as much as I can about my DeHarts. Did you buy my book. If so you have the picture of Susan Malinda DeHart and you have the background of the DeHarts. My line is Aaron DeHart who married Malinda Ellender Dennis. Elijah was the first to move from Amherst Co., VA to the Charity section of Patrick Co., VA. All of that family was in Patrick Co., VA by 1799. Aaron died between September 1793 and April 1795.The Charity section includes all of that part of Patrick County north of the Smith River and east of Widgeon Creek to the Floyd and Franklin County lines. James was born in 1765. Elijah born in 1776, Gabriel P. Dehart (mine) born 1780, died 1870, Mary and Susannah. I am sure you will check out my book. I am in the midst of doing a Supplement as asked for by the Stuart Library. Do you want to keep it a secret about Charlied Creed's DeHart father, or can I add that in my book. My Mom's great grandmother was Susan Malinda DeHart. If I find any pictures, I will send them to you. After decades of effort that many of you shared in, I have at last found the surname of the father of my paternal grandfather, Charlie Creed Harris, who was born out of wedlock to Elizabeth Harris on 12 July 1878. Yesterday I learned that my Y chromosome is a close match with that of a man named DeHart who lives in Arizona. The Y chromosome is handed down only from father to son, just as the surname traditionally is. Therefore if we follow our male ancestors back far enough, Mr. DeHart and I had the same male ancestor who was probably named DeHart. Our match is close enough that there is a 97% probability that our shared ancestor lived within the past 400 years. Mr. DeHart traces his ancestors back to Simon Aertszen DeHart, born in Holland in 1643, who came to America before 1676. All the Patrick County DeHarts also descend from Simon Aertszen, but Mr. DeHart’s line and the Patrick County DeHarts descend from two different sons of Simon Aertszen. There were 55 male DeHarts in Patrick and Floyd counties between ages 14 and 72 in 1877, and I am trying to narrow the list of possible great grandfathers. Age is of course an important factor, but I am guessing that my great grandfather DeHart also lived in the Vesta-Mountain View area near the family of Elizabeth Harris. Several people have generously provided photographs of DeHarts from that time and area, and some of them show a striking resemblance to my grandfather. If anyone knows of other such photos of DeHarts I would like to know where I can have a look at them. I would also like to hear of any family stories possibly linking a DeHart with Elizabeth Harris or other members of the family of Greenville and Rhoda Davis Harris. In addition I am wondering if there are any male DeHarts from Patrick County who are thinking about having their DNA tested. I would be glad to assist any who are considering it. As you can see, it is an extremely effective genealogical tool. Finally, thanks to all of you who over the years have looked up documents and provided ideas and encouragement. Charles Leon Harris (almost a DeHart)
Creed Allen was my 2nd great grandfather. He married Nancy Elizabeth Martin, she was about 5 years older than he was. My family told me that he disappeared one morning on his way to work at a sawmill in Patrick Co, VA. Nancy Elizabeth Martin Allen is buried in a cemetery near the Bouldin Presbyterian Church at what is known as the crossroads area of Patrick Co. I can send you other information I have on Creed Allen but need to get my records here in front of me. I have always felt that he went to WVA leaving his family in Patrick Co. Whether they knew he went is not known by anyone in my family but his father Preston Allen left his mother Lucy Boyd Allen and he went to WVA where he remarried twice and had other children. Lucy Boyd Allen also remarried to a John Walker and they lived in Patrick Co until John Walkers death. Then Lucy went to live with relatives in Kansas (think I am remembering this right)and she is buried out there. Let me get my information together and I will get back to you. I am interested in hearing more about Creed Allen's death as I have not been able to find any information that tells where he died. Do you have Ancestry.com by any chance? There are some family trees there that are not on Rootsweb that has Creed Allen. Here is some info from one of them. Also, I have some more info going back to William Allen Sr., father of Preston, but need to be on my son's computer where my Family Tree Maker info is stored. Can anyone help me find information on Creed Allen from Patrick County. He was the father of Lucy, Nathan Allen. He died in a mine cave in before Nathan was born. This was around 1866. I was looking for any information about the family of Jonadab Waid/Wade. He was in Henry or Patrick counties in 1790 and 1800, and the census of Rockingham Co. NC in 1820. There may be a Webb connection of some sort. Thanks. Mary
Does anyone know if there is, or will be, a Heritage of Henry Co. book? The only book I know of is the 1923 edition of History of Henry Co. Hope there is something else on that county. Thank you.
As far as I know, there are no plans to do a heritage book for Henry County. Two histories of our county were written in the 20s...one is by Judith Parks America Hill, the other by Lewis G. Pedigo is a history of both Patrick and Henry Counties. These are usually reprinted by Clearfield Publishers in Baltimore. I wish that someone would do a heritage or history book for Henry, as we definitely need a new one. I am looking for any information I can find on Doshia LAWSON who died in the Roanoke area in 1993. She was married to Robert Lee Graham, Sr. and her only two children were Douglas Chandler Graham and Robert Lee Graham, Jr. (Jr. died in ORmond Beach, Florida October 19, 2005) We have a lot of information on the Graham side of the family but practically nothing on Doshia Lawson and her family. Any Help will be greatly appreciated. Carlisle Bowling
On Aug 8 1885 Nancy "Nannie" A Campbell married Charles Madison "Maddy" Shelton of Patrick Co VA. Who were her parents? Marriage records states father as J. Campbell. Nannie died before 1899, Patrick Co VA. Thanks Deb __________________________________ Yahoo! Mail - PC Magazine Editors' Choice 2005 http://mail.yahoo.com
After researching the Robertsons for over 25 years, I have been unable to find parents for Millie. Her father is believed to have been John Ratliff who appeared in Patrick County at the same time as David and Millie but aside from the time line, there is no proof. ----- Original Message ----- From: "mvWG" <mvwg@comcast.net> To: <VAPATRIC-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, October 27, 2005 12:07 AM Subject: Re: [VAPATRICK] Ayers, Ratliff, Shelton, and Hubbard/Stanley > Do you have information on the family of Millie Ratliff who married David > Robertson? Do you have information on the family of Millie Ratliff who married David Robertson? I have not found the name of her parents. Thank you. Mary W.
Robert Ayers, I have quite a bit of information on Patrick Co Va families, but I did not have any connection to Elias Ratliff & Susan Smart. I looked up some census records and marriage records and here is what I found: Patrick Co VA Marriage Record: 20 Dec 1850 Elias Ratliff & Susan Jemima Smart. There was no record of parental permission, so she must have been 18 or misstated her age. Patrick Co VA Marriage Record: 26 Jun 1822: Benjamin Ratliff, son of Ralph Ratliff and Elizabeth Stickleman. Sur.Valentine Ratliff. Benjamin and Elizabeth could possibly be Elias' parents. There are twelve Ratliff marriages in Pat. Co VA. from 1791 to 1850. If you want the rest of them. I will send them. The two following Census Records are from 1850 Wythe Co VA, 68th Dist. Fam 315: Elias Ratliff 44, Eliza 19, Lefew (male) 16, Mary 14, Giles P. 13, Martha F. 11, Susan E. 8, all born in Virginia Fam 813 Polly Smart 52, Moses 20, Susan 18, David 12, Henry 10, all born in North Carolina. The following Census Record is from 1860 Wythe Co VA 68th Dist. Fam 1292: Elias Ratliff 57, Susan 25, Washington 10, James 7, Mary 4, Virginia age not stated, all born in Virginia. I also have records on the Hubbards and Pendletons, mostly Patrick Co VA. I do not have time to search them now, but will try to get back to you later. I hope some of ths helps. Nettie, The Susan Smart living in Wythe Co. is the same who married Elias Ratliff. And the Elias Ratliff you showed is the right one. I just wonder why they didn't marry in Wythe Co. and chose to go to Patrick? Was there a connection between those counties back then? Also, Elias' and Susan's children thought her last name was Surrat rather than Smart going by their marriage license information. THanks so much for looking this stuff up for me. ANYTHING is helpful and adds new connections in my mind between the families. If you can, get back with me concerning the Hubbard and Pendleton info. As of now, I know pratically NOTHING about them. WHen I first started this I meant to do one branch of my family. That was 5 years ago and I am now doing 5 surnames in depth and trying to connect all the ladies maiden names in. I never thought I'd get this much discovered. Thanks again for the information!
