Is there a map available showing the settlers names in the 1700's and/or 1800's? This can either be a map of Henry Co., a map of Patrick Co., or a map that includes both counties. The counties around Henry & Patrick have these Early Settlers or Owners maps and I am hoping there is one for this area. Thank you.

Dear all, I agree that Martins are confusing but there are a lot documents attesting to some of these facts. I have included some here, I try to only list things that have documents. I have had some things that have been wrong and have been gracioulsy corrected. I want to know the truth whatever that takes. Thanks Regina Vest Buchanan The information for the children of Isaac Martin (wife Phylis), James Martin (wife Ann Oglesby) and William Martin (wife Sarah Harris) came from their wills. Agreed! Eunice, you are such a valuable asset for us all! If not for your work, we would all still be mostly, in the dark! I'm still looking at ZARVON's post and trying to decipher these Martins and looking to see if we all connect somewhere...I suppose back at Isaac and Fillis/Phyllis? or maybe further back? Looking for any information about the families of Charles Jones, Rev. John King, Sylvester Webb, Morris Webb, Sally Webb, Fannie Webb, the East family (Wm. Thomas, Joseph etc.) and any Wade's that may connect to them. The time period was about the late 1700's and the 1800's in Pittsylvania County to the area that became Henry Co. & Patrick Co. Leatherwood and Marrowbone Creek as well as Horsepasture District have been mentioned with these families. Thanks for any information. Mary
As I have often stated, I am not about to try to unravel the Martins... There were so many of them and parents who named children after brothers and sisters were no help at all. I have no idea who among us is right! I send what I have in hopes that it will be of help, but I trust that Martin descendants will do their own checking. Hi all: For a start..you wrote "I have only two that married anyone named Mary and none who married a Polly." Well, Polly is a common nickname for Mary. Perhaps we all have differences in our files....and hopefully we can learn from one another. I am a double descendant from the William MARTIN and Delphia (Philadelphia) WALDEN line. I'm betting that the two or more sons each have a daughter named for their mother; that is a Delphia/Adelphia/Philadelphia Martin. My William Martin was born abt 1856 in Halifax Co VA : MARTIN, William (VA) Revolutionary War Records VIRGINIA SECTION II (18) [DOCUMENT No. 44] 7569 Martin, William State Line Halifax Co., VA Chancery case 1804-028, John Clay vs. Moses Martin & wife. This chancery case was brought in order to resolve ownership of land which had previously belonged to William Martin who was now deceased. Benjamin Martin was listed as the only son of William Martin, who is also now deceased. Other descendants of William Martin are listed as Philadelphia Martin, wife of Moses Martin, Tabitha Martin, wife of James Garner( should read GARDNER), Susannah Martin, Priscilla Martin, Roda Martin, and Polly Martin, all of whom were possibly living in Montgomery County, Virginia in 1803 when they were summoned to court to answer this Bill in Chancery. My 5th Ggrandfather Walter Kelly was an Irish Quaker who came to the Colonies about 1760 and helped establish the Quaker Church in South Carolina. The following is an excerpt from "Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol 6". This Vol. covers Va. and NC. meeting minutes. "The Society of Friends was first planted in Virginia on the Eastern Shore and then in the region south of the lower James River which area is penetrated by the Nansemond and Elizabeth Rivers. All the meetings in the counties there are closely related by both ties of blood and organization. The same families which first settled Isle of Wight County, later moved on into Nansemond, and in the period 1660-63 almost every Quaker family sent members to become the first settlers of the state of North Carolina. Wheeler in his History of North Carolina, says, The first permanent settlement (i.e. in Perquimans Co.) was formed after the expulsion of the Quakers from Virginia in 1662. So one should not be surprised to find the same family names in all these places. Because the earliest Quakers of Isle of Wight County were either so new in the faith or were laboring under such severe persecution, they left little of a positive nature concerning the history of their beginnings as a religious group. The fact that so many were recent converts accounts for the apparent lack of any true understanding of Friends discipline or any authentic or proper organization in their meetings before 1672." Pat C. Johns in Va.
If I am wrong it is because of historical text resources I use in compiling these newsreleases. I put a great deal of time and effort into researching these from various sources before I release them to keep them historically correct. As for your Woods, I cannot answer that question, but do know who can. You need to e-mail hegefhc@guilford.edu and them this question. Guilford College houses some, but not all the Quaker records of Patrick County. I know Friends Mission is definitely recorded there at Guilford. This e-mail is for the Hege Library, Friends Historical Collection. Thank you for your input and question. Alpha, I think you're mistaken in saying that the Quakers were the "first settlers in America and settled the land near Philadelphia". If they came to America in 1783, we were already an independent United States, having fought the Revolutionary War by then. Were the UNDERWOODs, from whom I descend, part of the Patrick CoVA settlements of Quakers? There is a Castlewood in Russell County Virginia, which is in the southwestern part of the state. It would be quite a distance from Patrick. However, I did find relatives from Henry/Patrick County stopping off there on the way to Breathitt County KY. They were listed among the petitioners for the formation of Russell County. Does anyone know anything about a place called "Castle Woods" or "Woods Castle"? It was supposed to be in or near Patrick or Franklin County, VA. I have some ancestors that either lived there for a while, or stayed a while during their trek from the Bedford/Campbell County, VA area to Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio. Thank you, Harold in Florida
Seems there are some castles in Virginia of unknown origin: Well, definitley unknown to me! http://www.dupontcastle.com/castles/va_unk6.htm I've heard of Wood's Castle but the details escape me now..will post if I find the reference. Plans are still on for the pilgrimage. I have gone up there once to do a check out trip, but there was still too much snow on the ground. I will be making a trip up there hopefully this weekend to make sure there are no obsticles to getting there. You all may be able to stay at the Tuggle's Gap Motel where we can meet that morning, there is also the Pine Tavern in Floyd and some other Bed and Breakfasts. There is a motel in Meadows of Dan and one in Stuart (The Virginian). Hope to see you all the 29th.
