    1. Re: [VAPATRICK] Pilgrimage to Woods Gap Cemetary
    2. After my last visit to the cemetery about 20 years ago, I sketched its location on a topo map, which I still have. After crossing a dam you pass a cabin, then bear southwest parallel to the stream (Widgeon Creek) for about 200 yards. Here for the sake of posterity are the coordinates: N36° 51.43' W80° 15.89'. I will program them into my GPS, which should take us right to the cemetery if necessary. In those days only a Jeep dared drive down to the cabin, but it appears the road has been improved. I don’t believe the walking distance will be more than half a mile. Looking forward to the pilgrimage. Charles Leon Harris

    3. For the benefit on anyone interested that I do not have your address, I am sending out this update on the planned pilgrimage to the graves of Grandpa Dickey Wood and his four wives at Woods Gap on the upcomming 29 April. I went looking for the grave yard last weekend and it was not where I had thought it was. Consulting Mr. Pilson's book gave no better directions, but I did see that a friend of mine's grandparents were buried there, which I had forgot, and contacted her. She put me in touch with the man who maintains the cemetary and I will meet with him next Saturday afternoon and we will go over there. I am advised there is a walk of approximatly 3/4 of a mile involved. 3. I am trying to determine the parents of Mary "Polly" King who married Charles Jones abt. 1790 in Henry County. In the book "History of Henry Co. Va." under Charles Jones Family it is stated that Polly King Jones was the daughter of Rev. John King of Leatherwood. In the King Family section it states that George King, the pioneer, is a first cousin of Rev. John King. This George King married Mary Niblet. Mary "Polly" King who married Charles Jones is listed as a daughter of George King. Can anyone tell me if George King or his cousin, Rev. John King, had a daughter named Mary (or Polly). Thank you. 2. If you are looking for a specific person or family in Patrick County, there are ways to find them without the kind of map that is available for other counties. Tax records and deeds contain information about where people lived. My "Places Named in Deed Book I 1791-1801" might be helpful. It lists places named in early Patrick County deeds with the surnames of people named in deeds for each place. _http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/patrick/deeds/deedbk01-places.txt_ (http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/patrick/deeds/deedbk01-places.txt) Charles Leon Harris

    3. In case anyone's interested, I think these maps by John R. Hildebrand are the "early settlers" maps the question referred to. His series includes maps of Augusta, Bedford, Botetourt, Fincastle, Franklin, Montgomery, Rockbridge, Roanoke, and Wythe countites, but apparently none of Henry or Patrick.
