    1. Re: [VAPATRICK] Patrick County Heritage Book Volume II
    2. Lee Anders
    3. Good evening, Patrick County Researchers! Just to let you guys know, my copy arrived Monday because it went first to my aunt who then sent it on to me. But *already* a family connection is made. A lady in Stuart submitted some information on one of my lines, and I looked her up within minutes of reading the story. Turns out, we are cousins, and I now know where two of my ggg-greatparents are buried! She doesn't fool with the internet, and without this book, I would never have found her. That alone is worth every penny of the cost! Long live the county heritage book tradition! Lee Anders Inman, SC

    1. Patrick County Heritage Book Volume II - Thank You & a Story
    2. Alpha Hiatt
    3. I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of you who wrote stories for The Patrick County Heritage Book Volume II. It has been a huge success. We strived very hard to really go for quality and content this time, and it shows. The book is beautifully done. I also want to thank my wonderful committee and their families for all their hard work and support. They are the back bone of any project like this, working many tireless hours with much dedication and devotion towards making every story and picture look its best. HATS OFF TO YOU! And, building on Lee Anders connection with an unknown cousin.....one of the most moving experiences about our book that I was made aware of just a week ago, an elderly lady here in Patrick County who is bedridden, took our book and laid in bed and read the book to her daughter and shared wonderful stories and memories of her life as well. I was so moved by this call, I nearly found myself crying because it really touched my heart. We'd like to hear from some of you....what did you think of our book, and how did it impact your life? Anymore family connections out there? I know of one other than Lee's that occurred, as I was talking with a lady in Patrick County yesterday who discovered two cousins both of whom have already come to visit and they live in other states. 3. My Heritage Book Volume II arrived today and it is so well-done. There is lots of information in it regarding my Harris and Bowman relatives and I can't wait to read it from cover to cover. And, I really must mention how beautiful the book is! The book didn't arrive by UPS (brown truck) though. It was mailed from the PCHS on Monday 4-24-06 via the U.S. Postal Service by Media Mail, which is a less-expensive parcel service (week to 10 days), and it arrived the day after mailing! Thanks so much for using the USPS to send my book to me. Harriet

    1. Who's who in Wood's Gap Cemetery
    2. While eagerly awaiting the pilgrimage to the Wood’s Gap Cemetery being conducted by Truman Adkins on the 29th, I became curious about the people buried there. It turns out that not surprisingly many were descendants of Father Dickey Wood, but others appear to have been just neighbors from both sides of the Floyd-Patrick border. Here are the records made by O. E. Pilson on 11 April 1977 in all caps, followed by a brief summary of what I found in census and other records. Charles Leon Harris RICHARD WOOD (FATHER DICKEY), PIONEER OF WOOD'S GAP, B. 1772 ; D. 1856. Born about 1776 according to 1850 census. Died 20 Jan 1859 according to the Patrick County Death Register. Son of John and Milly Wood of Bedford County. RACHEL COCKRAM WOOD, WIFE # 1, MOTHER OF 8 CHILDREN: HENRY, GERMAN, ALEXANDER, PETER, JOHN R., JEREMIAH, EDWARD & ANN, SHE DIED 13 DEC. 1823. Daughter of Edward and Mary Cockram. Date of death probably incorrect, as it is before Dickey’s marriage to Fannie Brammer. First child, Henry, born 1798 in Franklin County. FANNIE BRAMMER WOOD, WIFE # 2, NO CHILDREN. DIED 30 AUG. 1830. Married in Patrick County 8 Sep 1823. ELIZABETH DEHART WOOD, WIFE # 3, MOTHER OF 4 CHILDREN: PRESTON, JACKSON, DOLLIE, LUCINDA. SHE DIED 26 OCT. 1838 Probably daughter of James and Catherine DeHart. First child born about 1832. LUCY VIA WOOD, WIFE # 4, MOTHER OF 6 CHILDREN: FRED, BYRDINE, GEORGE, NANCY, RUTH, MATILDA, SHE DIED ABOUT 1851. Daughter of Richard and Frances Via. First child born 1841. Date of death Aug 1855. GOLDEN E. CANNADAY, B. 23 MAR. 1914 ; D. 7 NOV. 1935 * ANDREW J. CANNADAY, B. 5 APR. 1867 ; D. 22 MAY, 1935 * Patrick County birth register says Andrew J. Cannaday was born in Nov 1867 to Constant Cannaday and his second wife, Elizabeth. Andrew’s residence in the 1930 census was Floyd County, Court House District, south end. Golden was the son of Andrew J. Cannaday. ANICE MCALEXANDER, 1936 ; D. 1941 (U[ndertaker’s Marker]) DAVID HARLOW GRIFFITH, B. 3 MAY, 1915 ; D. 22 JAN. 1921 Son of William H. and Annie R. GRIFFITH, B. 1877 ; D. 1958 * (M) CLARA WHITE GRIFFITH, B. 1883 ; D. 1960 * The Patrick County birth register says Richard A. Griffith age 1 in the family of Sparrell F. and Artemesia [Hall] Griffith. According to the 1900 Patrick County, Smith River District census, Clara White was born June 1882, daughter of Alexander and Bettie A. White, and still single. She married Richard A. Griffith before 1920. JOHN B. COCKRAM, B. 1880 ; D. 1887 Born in Patrick County on 10 June 1880 to Gabriel A. and Lurinda A. Cockram, who lived in the Smith River District of Patrick County. 3. Which ones do you have questions about? I can tell you that the McAlexanders were related to Richard Wood thru a daughter with his 4th wife, Lucy VIA. The daughter was Laura Matilda Wood who married Charles McAlexander. I don't have a copy of their children at hand. The Cannadays married two of Anna Wood and David Cockram's sons. Anna being dau of Richard Wood and Rachel Cockram. The sons were David Cockram Jr married Ellie Cannaday and Peter Cockram married Mahala Cannaday. The Griffiths- related to Richard Wood in this way: Richard and Rachel's son Alexander Wood had a son John Wesley Wood; He married Celia Lily in WV and they had a dau, Minerva who married Henry Griffith. Now I know these folks aren't in your list but there may be other marriages or connections that I am not aware of. I suspect the woman named Iowa you reference below who married Haynes is the sister to Henry Griffith as he had a sister named Iowa Griffith who first married David Cockram, the same David Cockram who first married Ellie Cannady. Hope this is clearer than mud! 3. Hello Elnora, After a look at your webpage devoted to the Fraziers, I cannot help but think that the Abigail Frazier in my line must fit into this family somewhere, but so far I have not been able to pin down just how. Abigail was born about 1794 in North Carolina and married John Christy 23 Feb 1816 in Rowan County, North Carolina. They are both buried in Greene County, Indiana. I noticed that the given name Abigail shows up frequently on your webpage. Do you have any thoughts about whether Abigail might be the child of one of the descendant of Alexander Frazier? 2. I can't help with whether or not they stayed in the area, but she is named in her father's will (Patrick Co, VA; will written 4/27/1822 & returned May Court 1822, Will Book 1, page 149; inventory appraised 5/25/1822 & recorded October 1822, Will Book 1, Page 323-325) (see this link for a transcription: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/patrick/wills/thomas02.txt). Also, from another researcher so I can't verify this, they did marry in 1808: Bond 18 Dec 1808. Min. return 21 Dec 1808 - James Wade & Nancy Thomas. Sur. Benjamin Thomas. Min. Maning Hill. Nancy's brother, Washington Thomas, is my ancestor. Hope this helps.
