He was serving as a Teamster with the 45th Regiment., Confederate States Army. He was a member of Co. F., having enlisted 29 May 1861, at Wytheville, VA, for a period of 12 mos. by Col. H. Heth. He left behind a wife, nee Charlotte Adeline CANNADAY, a daughter, Martha Ann, then not quite six years old, and two sons, Peter Henry, then four, and Samuel J., two years old. He was the son of George P. THOMPSON, a veteran of the War of 1812, and Jane INGRAM, and the grandson of Jennings THOMPSON, who served from Goochland CoVA in the Revolutionary War, and Elizabeth STREET of Pittsylvania CoVA. He was my great-great-grandfather, and I am remembering him this Memorial Day. I know nothing of the circumstances of his being wounded, or of where the field hospital in which he died was. Though he died in the custody of the Union Army, I have thus far been unable to find our where his body might have been buried. 1. Re: [VAPATRICK] Daniel Thurman Harris
    2. Daniel Thurmon Harris was the son of Henry Harris, born 19 Oct 1877 in Leaksville NC, and Leonia Conner, born about 1879 in VA, according to Wilma Lawson Padgett. Henry was the son of Archibald Harris. The 1910 Patrick County census says Henry was born in West Virginia, and his father was born in VA. Daniel Thurman Harris married Onie Ella Harris (11 Feb 1909 - June 1986), daughter of Byrd and Mary I. Boyd Harris. Byrd Harris (27 Oct 1871 - after 1930) was the son of Samuel Green and Mahala Ann Finney Harris. I have more details if you are interested. Charles Leon Harris

    2. I'm among those who could not afford to purchase the new book. And as Mizzkat says I would appreciate any little tidbits that could be tossed my way. But that is neither here nor there...I am upset about the attitude of those involved in the book. There is not, and never has been, one person who can do their genealogy without assistance from others. In the few times I have been lucky enough to go to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, I have had the opportunity to go through the numerous county history books and pick up the little tidbits. These books are notorious for printing half truths since the items are not proven. However, they may sometimes furnish a clue that can get you on the track of the correct information. In all the many years I have pursued this insanity we call genealogy I have never known such selfishness. It appears that the committee who put the book together did it for love of money and not love of genealogy. I hope there never comes a time when these persons need the help of someone else. Mizzkat you are not alone. =(^!^)=

My understanding of copyright law is that what she requested, quoted as follows "I am not asking for a "look up" or any special attention what so ever, but just that as you read, you just might let that name stick in your head and pass on tidbits you may come across." falls under the heading of "fair use." Fair use permits brief excerpts from a large copyrighted work to be legally shared for research purposes. Obviously there are gray areas that only a court could resolve, and clearly it is illegal to copy large portions of another work without permission. Also to avoid plagiarism the source of information should be cited. Genealogy, as well as scholarly activity, would be impossible if one could never use information from copyrighted materials. 3. Wow! It is noble to want to put this "to rest", but let's examine what is going on. The Patrick Co., VA Heritage Book Committee devoted 24 months of their lives to this project. A labor of love! Days and many nights. If folk cannot understand that, we are truly sorry! Further, if folk cannot afford to buy a copy...we are also sorry! We can tell you that (based on 28 years in this business) those who have purchased books are the better for it! Many of our 1978-1990 Heritage books (first editions) are selling for $200. to $250. Let's tip our hats to Ms. Alpha and her fine crew! ...and if you are truly interested in the book, buy one. By the way, watch for details about the reprinting of Patrick County, VA Vol. One! 1. Ptrick Co., VA- History Book Vol II
    2. Elnora Wyrick
    3. Dear Alpha & List, I have a wonderful story about this book and the article I wrote for it- First I worked hard/searched/prayed -hit brick wall after brick wall for 10 years looking for anything on my GGrandfather John William Lee's family- all I knew was he was born in VA in about 1850---that was it!! On November 10, 2005 I finally received a response to an Inquiry I had posted in January 1999 on the " Ancestry Boards" for my Grandmother's 2 Half sisters and have not stopped receiving Family History since. By March 2005 I had Vol. I Patrick County History Book, and the Lewis Pedigo Book- and had met many, many new cousins in VA, NC and in TX where GGrandpa John Wm Lee lived and married 3 times, where my Grandmother Emma Akin (Lee) Luster- McBee was born into the 2nd marriage. About that time I learned about the new book being put together so I tried to write a short article on my 3X-Grandparents Benjamin & Virginia (Fulkerson) Frazier's family including information on their oldest daughter Ann Mariah Frazier & Peter Alexander Lee's family, my Great Grandfather John Wm. Lee was their oldest son- they had migrated to Lamar County, Texas by 1860. Well the short story turned in to a pretty long article-well over the fee limit- and still didn't tell the entire story by any-means. I am just grateful that the Historical Society is there and so very helpful and to all those Wonderful New Cousins that provided their Family information to me, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you to ALL of you. Since the book, I have put a little more of our Family information and pictures reported to be of Peter Alexander & Ann Mariah Frazier Lee on our Home page that I didn't have in time for the book. Surnames in Patrick County that I am connected to; starting with John G Lee married 2 Frans/Franz/France daughters, Susan (my GGGGrandmother and when she died her younger sister Nancy. Other's are Carter, Jones, Critz, Fulkerson, Frazier, Tudor, Herford, Blackard, Dunovant, Shelton, and the List goes ON and ON...... My Best to All of you, hope you are as fortunate as I was, I have very deep roots in Patrick County, VA-Due to health I will never get to visit there but I can learn about it from the Books and know it is a Beautiful part of our Country. Thank you for sharing. I am not asking for a "look up" or any special attention what so ever, but just that as you read, you just might let that name stick in your head and pass on tidbits you may come across.
