Kathy, I found an Obediah Massey who married Lorvinia HOLLY, dau/o James, Feb. 21, 1840. Surety Joel HOLLY. This info. taken from Franklin County, Virginia Marriages by Wingfield. pg. 152. Would this be your Obediah Massey? To the list, I am still searching the Maynors of Patrick Co. Desperately need information on Isaiah Maynor and names of all his children. Thanks, Bev >BINGO! Bev, Yes, it's the same Obediah Massey. Thanks so much for your info! Kathy
Kathy, Wow! Yes that really helps. I thank you so much for taking the time to look for me. I will now dive into this Massey file to see if I can add anything or have anything I didn't know was my family. Will keep in touch. Hi Kathy, I really don't know if it helps or not. I realized after I sent my question that I had not included the dates. Here is what I have (from 1850 Meade Co. KY and Patrick Co. VA records). Jubal was b. abt 1795 in VA, m/1 Elizabeth Gravitt PHILPOTT 1819 in Patrick Co. VA. There are 5 of their children listed on the 1850 KY census: John W. MASSEY, abt 1822, Amanda E. MASSEY, abt 1834, Martha MASSEY, abt 1837, James MASSEY, abt 1839, Frances MASSEY abt 1843. Could have been a couple of earlier ones. Elizabeth died between 1843-1850; Jubal married Mary Ann PARR, widow of Samuel A. PHILPOTT (Elizabeth's brother), in April 1850 Meade Co. KY. That is about it.... Kathryn
Kathryn, Believe it or not, the name Addison was probably a coicidence, but I just got some info that included a James Jubal Massey. He was born abt. 1785 and I have 2 children, Leah (b. 1815) and Cynthia (b. 1821). He was the son of George or Richard or George Richard. If you read my reply to Cindy, you'll know why I'm pretty sure his father's name was George. He had at least 3 siblings, Warren (my gggg grandfather), Sally and Obediah. George (B. abt 1741) was the son of Ralph Massey (b. May 9, 1710) and Jamimah_________ (b. June 10, 1710). George married Temperance Flood on Feb. 3, 1771. That's all the early info that I have. Hope it helps! Kathy
Cindy, BINGO! I found Obediah Massey (b. abt 1790) who was married first to Nancy Bryant and had 2 children Sarah (b. 1820) and James Madison (b. 1822). My info then shows a second marriage to Lavinia ____. They had 5 children: Exoinia (b. 1846), George W. (b. 1850), Caroline (b. 1851), Virginia Frances (b. 1856) and Parthenia (b. 1857). Virginia married William Lawson (b. 1855) on Nov. 14, 1878. Obediah was the brother of my gggg grandfather, Warren Massey. The only discrepancy I've found is that in my original info, Warren and therefore Obediah were the sons of George Massey (b. abt 1741) and Temperance Flood (b. abt 1745) who married Feb. 3, 1771. In the other info, their father is listed as Richard Massey (no dates). As Obediah had a son George and Warren had a daughter Temperance, I tend to think that my original records are correct and that those are family names. That, plus the fact that the other records use many middle names as first names for Warren's children, so maybe Richard was George's middle name?? I have to believe that my records for Warren's children are correct as they to me from info given by Warren's granddaughter who would have known her aunts and uncles. Anyway, the only other early info I have is that George Massey's parents were Ralph Massey (b. May 9, 1710) and Jamimah_________ (b. June 10 1710). Hope this helps. Kathy
Kathy, I have my fingers and toes crossed. All, Saw this article and noticed many names that some of the list servers members are researching and thought I should past it on. Would appreciate if anybody has additional info on this Camp. Gary Sutphin This is transcribed from The Floyd Rifleman, August 1998 , the newsletter of Stuarts Horse Artillery, Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp # 1784, Floyd, VA. A handwritten note in margin states this article was written by Rudy West and appeared in the Floyd Press newspaper in 1939. The same note also states that T. K. DeWitt, 4th VA Infantry, who died in 1940, was the last surviving Confederate Soldier from Floyd County. The note contradicts the text of the article and the closest listing in the VA Records Library in Richmond is for a Thomas R. DeWitt, 3rd VA Reserves. United Confederate Veterans Camp #111, Floyd, VA The soldiers of the Confederacy from Floyd County were organized in 1903. Their organization was called Camp Number 111. The charter was dated September 28, 1903. The following men were listed as the first officers of the organization: Dr. C. M. Stigleman, Commander Major A. Hartman, 1st Lt. B. Bishop, 2nd Lt. W. T. Sowers, 3rd Lt. N. J. Agnew, Adjutant J. W. Lee, Treasurer Col. P. F. Howell, Quartermaster Capt. P. F. Shelton, Sergeant Major Lt. David Willis, Officer of the Day M. Chingpeel, Color Bearer W. M. Shelor, 1st Color Bearer G. M. Whitlow, 2nd Color Bearer Dr. T. H. Howard, Surgeon Dr. A. J. Hoback, Assistant Surgeon Rev. A. Hogan, Chaplain From the record book, it appears that this organization was kept active until early 1930s. A note in the record book then has this statement: There was present in 1908 twenty seven members; in 1920 fourteen members and in 1930 seven members. As far as it could be learned, the last Confederate Soldier in the County to die was John K. Lovell, September, 1938. (H. E. Howards 54th Virginia Regimental history series list his name as James K. Lovell). He served in Company D, 54th Virginia Infantry Regiment. The unit for the wives, daughters, and granddaughters of the Soldiers of the Confederacy was called the Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC). At the same period of time as for Camp No. 111, there was an active chapter of the UDC.

Thanks Sharon & Nettie: My Robert Boyd was b. 1834 in Franklin Co. He is on the Russell Co. census 1850, 16 yo, with his parents Elisha and Leah Boyd. Nettie tells me that Leah is Ella Leah Cockran and that Elisha's parents were Robert Boyd b. abt. 1780 and Elisabeth Rakes, dtr. of Charles Rakes. The Russell County History has several Boyds listed and says that Jonathan Boyd and two Boyd cousins (apparently Robert and another fellow) left Patrick Co Va in the early 1830s. "Jonathan was a great hunter and had visited this area of Russell C. before." If anyone wants details of brothers & sisters, etc. let me know. My Boyds run like this (many thanks to Nettie) 1. Robert Boyd, brother of Joseph Boyd, b. abt 1780 2. Elisha Boyd, b. abt 1807 in Patrick Co 3. Robert Boyd. b. 1834 in Franklin Co. 4. Samuel B. Boyd, b. 1855, d. 1915 in Vanceburg, Lewis Co., KY 5. Bessie Boyd, b. 28 Mar 1905 in Vanceburg, d. 12 Aug 1977 in Fayette Co., WV, m. George Virgil Estep, 1920 in Fayette Co. 6. James Franklin Estep 7. James Larry Estep Thanks again. Janet Estep.

Hello, I'm not sure the age of your Robert. Robert was the brother and son of Jonathan. If he was the son then Mary Burnett was the mother. If he was the brother then Joseph Boyd wife Nancy was the father. They indeed were from Russell Co. They all went to Russell before 1850. Joseph may have had a brother John. So far I can't find Joseph's father but believe it was Joseph who migrated from PA to right across the border to NC. Jonathan was suppose to be on a hunting trip and saw Russell co. Liked it and moved there. I believe that Joseph maried Nancy who was an AARON. According to my grandmother AARON was the maiden name of the wife of a BOYD. She had written it down from her mother, who knew the family history.
