My name is Melanie Robertson and I and my mother, Margaret Butler, are researching the following names in Patrick Co. ANDERSON, BASHAM, BRAGG, BUTLER, COOK, FARLEY, HUNT, MASSEY(MASSIE, MASEY),WILLIAMS and WOOD. Our main lines are ANDERSON and WILLIAMS. I work on the WILLIAMS and Mom works on the ANDERSON. We do alot of cross-referencing since, like most families in the 1700's and 1800's married into those living in close proximity to themselves, including their own cousins! We are always glad to share any info to help other "cousins". In genealogy, we are all Cousins!! Hope we can all benefit! Melanie Robertson in Hinton, WV margarat@cwv.net

I am looking for names and if possible a short story written by submitter - nothing copywrited or having been printed by a published source for the past 100 years.-- I want to start up a section on Patrick County VA., Home Page, honoring the "Early Settlers". I want to inclued the people living here, when Patrick county was formed in 1790 and through the years of 1855. Much has been done following the time frame of 1855 and on, because of the civil war. The information you submitt with be placed here for other researchers to read and research from. If you do not want another researcher to copy what you send, please do not send it to my project. I am looking for those who have information to share with others and will enjoy doing so. I don't want to start a lot of lawsuits and fights. With this in mind I am looking those who want to participate in my Early Settlers of Patrick County, Virginia project. Can someone tell me what the name of the post office was at the current Patrick Springs, Virginia location. I know that Patrick Springs became a post office in 1925 and that prior to that it was called Shuff, Virginia and prior to that it was called Spa Brook Station, Virginia. What I need to know is the name of the post office for that area prior to that, or what was the name of the closest post office to that area. /s/ Jim Spencer

to Cynthia - i scanned the roots web messages & read about your search - you mentioned the 1860 Free Inhabitants Census. i have reached a "block" in my family research & didnt think to check this source. Ancestor, HANNAH SCALES approximately b1844 in patrick co by oral history. There is a slave owner Nathaniel SCALES (native of Va.) living in Forsyth Co. in 1850, who had 18 slaves, one a female aged 3 (that would place her birth around 1847). no info as to where these slaves were born. and i do not know if this is the ancestor i am looking for. (Forsyth is birthplace and home of my relatives). can you give me more info on the Free Census ? or have any other suggestions, would appreciate any recommendations. thanks. linda in maryland ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. I need a TWP. and any info provided by the 1810 and 1820 Patrick County Census for the Surname RIGNEY. This name could appear as RIGNY, REGNEY, REGNY. Any help with this most appreciated. We know several of the Rigneys were supposed to be in Patrict, I just don't have access to a census index here in Maryland. Many thanks Dusty Smith
