>>1 James McAlexander b: 1720 ..... 2 William McAlexander Sr b: January 13, 1743/44 d: March 08, 1822 << According to records submitted to the LDS Ancestral File ver. 4.17 (I can't put my hands on the submitter at the moment), William was born in London Derry, North Ireland. Here's his obituary: >From the "Lynchburg Press" 5 April 1822, page 3: "...on Friday, the 8th ult. at his residence in Patrick County, after a short illness, which he bore with Christian fortitude Mr. William McAlexander, in the 79th year of his age. Few have descended to the tomb more regretted. On the stage of life his conduct has been most exemplary. At an early age he became a professor of religion and a member of the Presbyterian church--he was a strict observer of the sabbat, and never known to use the name of God irreverently. He was firm in his purpose, inflexible in his integrity, unbound in his benevolence he was the friend of the poor, and the protector of the widow and the orphan. The good, disinterested neighbor, his heart was open to every noble feeling. Mr. McAlexander was one amongst the first settlers in that part of Virginia, and as a true repuglican soldier placed himself under the standard of his country, and with active zeal bore a faithful part in obtaining our independence. In him we have lost one of the fathers of our freedom. He has had three wives and 21 children--and now a widow and 18 children, besides a numerous train of connections and friends, are left to mourn their irreparable loss." Jenny was his first wife who died in 1798. She is the mother of Jane (1765), Esther(24 Dec 1767), James (1775), Margaret (1776), Sarah(1778), William (1780), Mary(1782), Nancy(1782), Elizabeth(1787), Alexander(1793), Hannah(1795) and John(1798). I am tracing Margaret (1776) who married Reuben Harris. I have a copy of the family bible and marriage record in 1786 of Alexander McAlexander(1756) and Martha (Patsy) Burnett, both of Amherst County. Alexander filed for a pension #5359 for his service in the Rev. War. He mentions an older brother John still alive in 1834 when he applied. They must be brothers to William. I'm a descendant of four Patrick Co. families: the SHARPs, the LYONs, the McALEXANDERs, & the BURNETTs. My g-g-grandfather was Samuel SHARP (b. ca. 1801-4; d. 1849 in Van Buren Co., MO), who married Frances Thurman LYON (ca. 1808-after 1860), daughter of William and Milly (McALEXANDER) LYON. William was the s/o William & Frances "Salley" (THURMOND) LYON from Amherst Co. (the part that later became Nelson Co.); Milley the d/o John & Agnes "Nancy" (BURNETT) McALEXANDER. I've been trying for some time -- and without success -- to determine who the parents of Samuel SHARP were. There were lots of SHARPs in Patrick Co. around about that time. Clues head in the direction of Robert & Philipena (SHELTON) SHARP, mainly because Samuel SHARP stood surety for the marriage of one of their daughters, Lucy, to Samuel GILBERT. I have just sent away to the Patrick Co. Courthouse for some deeds that I hope will help to clarify the relationships; but if anyone happens to have any info on this family, I'd love to receive it. I have some data about the daughters (Lucy, Sarah "Sallie", Frances, Louvenia, & probably Jane & "Nancy" Martha) of Robert & Philipena SHARP, but so far have not discovered any likely son except possibly Samuel. I can't remember if I already did this or not, so will do it now! I'm Tracy, and I'm working on the following lines: UNDERWOOD, JONES, TINCHER, MURDOCK, ERSKINE, HAYNES, JOYCE, MANNEN, GREER, and JUSTICE. I would appreciate any help on any of these lines at all!! I have quite a lot of Tincher info. to share, if anyone is needing it, too! Thank you!!
As requested, the surnames in which I'm interested - some direct and some collateral - are: Gordon Hairston Harden/Hardin Hereford Norman Penn Reamy/Ramy/Ramey Redd Staples Stovall Waller Although my most recent direct ancestry, great great grandparents Harden Hairston and Margaret Elizabeth Hereford Staples, left Patrick County in the mid 1800s all these families were part of the initial formation of Henry and Patrick Counties and the intermarriage is something again to behold. Hi! Sherry, I don't have that William Hall in my database but I am familiar with his name from researching the Hall family. I found these records for him on page 36 in the book Patrick Co., VA Marriages 1854-1874 by Jimmie M. Steele. "Elijah H. Hall and Nancy A. Cockram. 12 Mar 1863. He age 17-2-18 s/ Wm and Celia Hall. She age 21, d/Peter Cockram. Min. Daniel Conner. p.37." "Joseph M. Hall and Serena E. Earles. 28 Dec. 1869. He age 20 s/ Wm H and Celia Hall. She age 22, b. Floyd Co., VA, d/Susan Earles. Min. Claiborne Plasters. p.60" "W C Hall and Susan M. Wood. 18 Aug 1867. He age 18, s/ Wm H. and Celia Hall. She age 17-6-24, d/ Jeremiah and Mary A. Wood. Min. A.J. Cassell. p.51" Hope this can help you or someone. Marsha **Genealogy: A hay stack full of needles. It's the threads I need.**
