Earl, I have that Creed was born ca 1827 in PCVA. I will check the PCVA marriages book to see if it lists his parents in the marriage record. To be honest, I don't know where I got that Creed was a son of Nathaniel. BTW...could you send me the info on Nathaniels children since I don't have all of it. I also have that Nathaniel married Sarah Jane Cruise, dau of John Cruise on 3 Dec 1844. Can you confirm that? Virginia, and died April 05, 1816 in Morgan co. Georgia. Notes for BENJAMIN COCKERHAM: Benjamin Cockerham was born ca. 1750 in Lunenburg co., Virginia, the son of John Cockerham. He was NOT the Benjamin Cockram who served in Capt. Charles Polk's Co. of North Carolina militia. However, he did see some sort of service. On May 14, 1782, again living in Mecklenburg co., he laid claim to a rifle taken to war and not returned, and for 235 cwt. of beef furnished the Continental Army. Mecklenburg records call him a "patriot." [Revolutionary War Records, Mecklenburg co., Virginia, O.B.5, pg 145-147] Known to have lived in South Carolina after the war, but he died in Morgan Co., Georgia, nephew Matthew Cockrum of Morgan co. being his executor. The will was drawn the 23of August 1815 and entered for record 11January 1818. Benjamin having died somewhere between those two dates. His wife's name is unknown but she died before he did. Benjamin's heirs were sons John, Benjamin II, Banister, and James, and grandsons Samuel Paskill, Marvill Kelley, George Brooks and Robert Brooks. Benjamin's son John was born before 1790 in Mecklenburg co., Virginia and inherited Benjamin's home place in Morgan co., Georgia, and one-fourth of his land. So far the correct John Cockrum has not been identified from the many on record. Benjamin's son Benjamin II, also inherited a quarter of his father's land. His second wíÇe, married in 1816, was Nancy Collins. His first wife;s identity is unknown. Two known sons, BenjaminIII, born in 1812 and still living in Morgan co., Georgia in 1850, and Andrew Jackson Cockrum, born in 1814 who migrated to Arkansas and Missouri. Let me add my thank you publicly to Eunice. Her books are great and reflect many, many hours of research. But more so, Eunice is great. She has sent me much valuable information. I would not mind asking her for one piece of information, but since Eunice has gone to the expense of publishing, I would buy the book if I had a series of questions. Thank you, Eunice, for your dedication. You have helped me immensely. You might want to try the library at William & Mary College in Williamsburg, VA. I have seen a GEN file that says that William COCKERHAM was in the house of Burgesses as was William SPENCER (his father-in-law). I don't know if they have it but it is a place to start.
I have been told of, but have never seen the book COLONIAL SURRY COUNTY, VIRGINIA by Boddie that is supposed to give the following information: George Cockerham b. 1503, England William Cockerham - Mary Burley b. 1533, Purbeck, Dorsetshire, Eng. I was told it was at the Bassett Library (Now History Center) and looked once for it years ago without suscess. (<Where is the spel check button?>)
This is a great list, I have made many contacts and received/shared much information on my Patrick County families. Thanks to all for your help, and I cannot thank Eunice Kirkman enought for the files she sent that have opened up whole new horizons. I am posting the following to serve as a background for the families I listed and those of you who have worked on them can compare with what you have: Mayo family: I have seen a Websight that gives two earlier generation than I have, but I am still checking into this. Martha Belcher AKERS was married to Creed AKERS (son of Nathaniel and Elizabeth AKERS) on 13 Mar 1848 in Patrick Co., VA She was a daughter of Benjamin BELCHER (sister to Reed). Let me know if you have further questions. BTW...Agnes HOUCHINS who married James AKERS was the daughter of Bennett HOUCHINS and Margaret PILSON. I believe I have seen the book, but don't remember any of that information in it. However, I have some of the information sent to me by another researcher. There is no proof that I know of.
Earl, Here's what I have on the Benjamin Belcher clan. I don't think I submitted this will to the PCVA GenWeb page, although I have transcribed it (with all grammatical errors intact!). American Genealogical-Biographical Index (AGBI) Called one of the most important genealogical collections and the equivalent of over 200 printed volumes, the American Genealogical-Biographical Index, or AGBI, is now available here at Ancestry.com. This database contains millions of records for persons whose names have appeared in printed genealogical records and family histories. Collecting data from sources largely from the last century, each entry contains the person's complete name, year of publication, state of birth (if known), abbreviated biographical data, and the book and page number of the original reference. In addition to family histories, other genealogical collections are indexed. These include the Boston Transcript (a genealogical column widely circulated), the complete 1790 Federal Census, and published Revolutionary War records. For researchers of American ancestors, this can be among the most valuable databases available at Ancestry. com. Bibliography: Godfrey Memorial Library. "American Genealogical-Biographical Index." I would like to thank Mr. Truman Adkins of Fieldale, VA for his help in breaking thru my 35 or more yrs brick wall on my Lyell family. After his offer to do lookups in Henry Co. on 1/4/99 I requested help on my Beckwith Lyell born 1793 Va. and wife Margaret (Peggy) Owen, who were married Sept 18, 1815 Pittsylvania Co. VA. I was amazed to receive an e-mail today with a long list of my elusive Lyells (Lyles), deeds listings, indexes of inventories and wills and an offer to pursue whichever record (s) I thought might help!!! Between us, we think we may be able to fill out a list of Beckwith's siblings from a brother, Jonathan Lyle's, death and names, including Beck, & other siblings, who sold their interests in his land. Jonathan was willed the land by his father Joseph. All of which will require proof, of course, but I've had no starting place before. As I told Mr. Adkins, my 96 year old Mom had pretty well given up on ever finding any information on her grt.gparents, so we do appreciate his help so much. This is a GREAT list! Thanks, Mary
