I have a serious delimma at the moment. My SAR application has been put on hold because I have been told I need more documented proof that Joseph MOLES was indeed the son of Jeremiah MOLES, SR. Is there possibly anyone on this list that might have a family Bible, a death certificate, marriage certificate or deed or will or any other document that will prove this relationship to the satisfaction of the SAR. This is what I know: Jeremiah MOLES, SR. married on July 18, 1776 in Chesterfield County, Virginia Lydia (Lydda) SMITH daughter of Richard and Hannah SMITH. Jeremiah and Lydia moved to Patrick County, Virginia about 1800 as his name is first included in the personal property tax lists for the year 1801. His name continues on those tax lists through the year 1825 when it is assumed that he must have died in Patrick County. I can prove that Jeremiah was the father of John MOLES and Jeremiah MOLES, Jr. and I know that Joseph MOLES was their brother, but I have no definite proof except a 1975 DAR application listing these three children for Jeremiah, Sr. I am told that DAR application is not proof enough because that information was "not substantiated" on that application. Joseph MOLES was born about 1777, probably in Rockingham County, Virginia. The name of his wife is not known as I have never located a marriage record for him--I do know that her name was "Jane" because on my great great grandmother's death certificate her parents are listed as Joseph and Jane MOLES. "Jane" must have died before 1842 because she was not named in her husband's will. Joseph MOLES made his will on February 23, 1842 (Patrick County Will Book 3, Page 240--I have a copy of this will.) His bequests included three shillings each to his grandchildren, Jeney Ann and Sally BRANCH; one dollar each to sons Samuel MOLES and James MOLES; one dollar to daughters Nancy BOLLING (my gg grandmother) and Mary MOLES; and the entire balance of his estate to daughter Caty MOLES who never married. Joseph died between Feb. 23 and the October term of Court in 1842. To my knowledge there is no death record in Patrick County--If someone could find one I would be thrilled, especially if it listed Jeremiah--or Lydia as a parent. I would appreciate it very much if everyone would make a search of their data banks to see if you have anything on my Joseph or my Jeremiah MOLES. Carlisle Bowling P. O. Patrick County & Staples Researchers - While I have strong views against unsolicited publication of stuff to discussion lists, I violate my own standards in posting the following obituary of Col. Samuel Staples. He was the first Clerk of Court of Patrick County and co-progenitor (along with brother John) of the Staples family in Virginia's Henry and Patrick Counties. This obituary appeared in "The Lynchburg Virginian" on April 21, 1825 about a month after his death. It is so classic and so accurately speaks of its time. ______________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------------------------------- DIED - At Patrick Courthouse, on Wednesday night the 23d ult. In the 65th year of his age, Col. Samuel Staples, formerly clerk of the county. The deceased had long laboured under a paralytic affliction, which deprived him in a great degree of the use of his limbs and speech. In the course of the last two years he experienced seven successive attacks; and such was the state of helplessness in which he was at length reduced that death became desirable. On Monday night the 21st ult. when last attacked, he appeared much better than common; eat a hearty supper & was unusually cheerful. But alas! it was the expiring blaze of the taper which burns brightest in its socket. Little did he dream that the angel of death was then winging its way to his mansion - and that in a few more fleeting moments, he would be called upon to meet his God. About 10 o'clock at night, after retiring in bed, he was discovered by a servant struggling with the fit of which he died. The family were alarmed - medical assistance called in; but it was soon perceived that the cold hand of death was upon him; and that the wheel was stopping at the cistern. He remained in a torpid, insensible state until the Wednesday night following, when he closed his eyes upon the scenes of this transitory life. _____________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------- I now alite the soap box and use this occasion to express my thanks to two awfully kind and gracious list subscribers who made this post possible, one in alerting me to the obit's existence and the second who obtained it for me. This selfless assistance and support of my genealogical quests has been made possible only though the "free" services of Rootsweb. Although Rootsweb services are without charge, that doesn't mean they are without cost. I want to thank all the wonderful people in Patrick County VA., for the warm welcome they gave me a few short months back when I took the CC job for Patrick Co. I enjoyed working with each one of you. I will be leaving you now, but not without first finding you a CC who will continue with the home page as it is. Only Rena, will be making it better. For one reason, she knows the area. She does research in the area of Patrick and Floyd. So, PLEASE JOIN ME IN GIVING RENA WORTHEN doreatr@rbnet.com A GREAT BIG WELCOME TO PATRICK COUNTY. I have recently been informed that Mary Agnes Branch and Archelus H. Staples may not have been married. My great uncle said that he heard that Mary Agnes went to work for Abram Staples (Archer's father) when she was about 14 and that she later moved in with Archer. I know that they had 9 children together, but unfortunately they have all died except for my grandmother and uncle. Neither of them remembers much since they were so young. They were the ones who had the tombstone placed at his grave as the school wanted to move the bodies and they refused. If you can find anything I would appreciate it. Thanks Robin << Can you tell me approx. when Mary Agnes Branch and A. H. Staples were married. If they married in Patrick, I can check for you the marriage register which should give names of her parents. I assume you know Mary Agnes is buried on the grounds of Stuart Elem. School. Her stone reads thus: Mary Agnes, Wife of A. H. Staples, b. 10 June 1886; d. 6 Sept. 1920 In 1993, some family members placed at same location a stone for A. H. which reads: Archer Hugh Staples, b. 15 July 1874; d. 11 July 1924. (I think his full name was "Archelaus Hughes Staples".) Barbara Barbara C. Baughan bbaughan@swva.net >>
