He died 17 Aug 1886 and was buried inLackey - Turner, Cemetery, Patrick Co., VA. Elkanah was a successfulfarmer and trader in discounted interest-bearing paper. He had as manyas 15 slaves at one time.Widely recognised, Elkanah served a term as aCivil Magistrate and was Land Valuing Commissioner for PatrickCounty, Virginia. Elkanah served as a Major in the county militia andentered service near the end of the War for Southern Independence. Hefought at Appomattox, Virginia. He lost his estate as a result of the warand worked hard to rebuild his position afterwards becoming a depot agent. Elkanah died of dropsey at age 76 years unmarried. 12 F xi. Elizabeth Jane TURNER was born23 Aug 1825 in Henry Co., VA. She died 1906 in Henry Co., VA.Elizabeth married (1) George WOODY on 28 Sep 1840 in Patrick Co.,VA. George was born about 1800. He died 15 Feb 1856.Elizabeth also married (2) Addison L. "Adda" JARRETT about 1858.Addison was born about 1820. He died 1913. Adda and Elizabeth had 5 or 6 children. + 13 M xii. Stephen Hubbard TURNER was born 8 Dec 1826 and died 23 Oct 1905. 14 M xiii. James Cornelius TURNER wasborn 10 May 1829 in Patrick Co., VA. He died Jul 1862 in Richmond,VA. James joined the CSA to fight during the War for SouthernIndependence. He took sick and died in a hospital in Richmond,Virginia. James married (1) Elizabeth BRIGHT on 10 Jun 1860 inPatrick Co., VA. Elizabeth was born in Floyd Co., VA.

James Soyars, Jr., born circa 1798, Pittsylvania County, Virginia, married Elizabeth Fowlkes, 3 October 1820, Pitts. Co. Marriage Book 1, Pg.71, bondsman was Anderson Fowlkes. James Soyars, Jr. was s/o James Soyars, b. circa 1760 in France, d. 30 October 1838, Pitts. Co., Va. and Jane Oakes, b. 8 October 1770, Halifax Co., Va., died 25 Nov. 1858, Pittsylvania Co., Va. (Her will is in Halifax County) they were married in Pitts. Co., Va. 16 December 1793 (Marriage Book 1, page 17) James is said to be s/o John Soyars, according to the History of Christian County, Kentucky, which I have not seen. He was wounded in the revolution, sereved as high sherriff of Pittsylvnia Co., Sgt At Arms of the Virginia Senate and is supposed to have been on a committee to welcome LaFayette on his tour of America in 1824. Jane was d/o Isaac Oakes (b. circa 1741 King William Co., Va d. May-June 1807, Halifax Co., Va., WB 7, Page 318) and his first wife, Rachel Crane.

Jeremiah Burnett (c1749-1848, Jackson Co. Mo.) who lived in Patrick County is said to have been the son of John Burnett of Hanover County. I have also seen references to his mother being Elizabeth Tate, but do not know where this is comming from. Can anyone help?
