I had ancestors who lost two children in Franklin County to Typhoid in 1862. With the war going and the conditions the soldiers lived it would be easy for epidemics to get started.
The 1850 Patrick County census has him listed as age 76, and born in Virginia. Mary "Polly" Burnett had apparently died sometime before this. I belive that Richard does not appear in the 1860 census, but have not seen a death record for him.
Carolyn, Glad to have helped. I don't know the eastern boundries of the Dan River Dist. but it's western side borders FCVA & CCVA & probably a part of Franklin Co. Can someone else help out here? Pamela, You probably already know this but to clarify, Nelson's 3rd wife was Sarah Cannaday, d/o William A. 'Patrick Billy' Cannaday & Martha "Patsy" Wright & the widow of Isaac Young. Do you know when Nelson died? Sarah d. 8-6-1882 PCVA but she was c21 yrs younger than Nelson too. Judith & All, I do have a note on the early Wood anc. Stephen & Ann, which says basically what Judith has stated...that there is a lot of confusion on Stephen & Ann & their John & John the father of our Dickey. Sorry to say, I didn't document my source. But Judith, if you could share your proof with us, I for one would be in your debt. This has driven me nuts for years & I would love to clear this up once & for all. Thanks. Must have been going around because I have an ancestor who had 4 children die in May 1862 in Carroll Co of typhoid fever. Rachel HGRACE5366@aol.com
There must have been an epidemic that year. I have more than a few Epperson deaths from diptheria in 1862. I saw somewhere (can't remember where) a list of epidemics for the 1800's. Maybe a death and mortality census online. LAP _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Get your free @yahoo.com address at http://mail.yahoo.com

No - it's in Franklin County. It must be in Will Book Two. I have Will Book One and it's not in that one. Book one covers 1786 to 1812. Barb S. ======= At 06:29 PM 2/18/99 -0500, you wrote: >Thanks, Barb, for posting the will, I was not aware it existed. Is it >recorded in Patrick County? >
In was common for Jr to be given to the younger person of same name in the family, and even the neighborhood, in 19th century. Middle names were not common so Sr and Jr were used instead of M.I. to differentiate the two. Richard Jr, could be a nephew, grandson, brother-in-law or even unrelated. Since the census taker visited first one, then the other. The two Richards are in the same neighborhood. Probably related in some way, though not necessarily so. Check out naming patterns. Thanks, Barb, for posting the will, I was not aware it existed. Is it recorded in Patrick County?
World record for age of ancestor (loosely defined to include uncles, aunts, etc.) this probably is record holder. Some 9,000 yro male skeleton in the West Country in England had enough intact in the dental pulp for a proper analysis of the mitochondrial DNA. Researchers, not expecting anything much but you never know, did some DNA analysis of local residents and found one man whose mitochondrial DNA matched. It looks as if therefore this skeleton was the living man's n-times-great uncle.
26, 1875 Death of a Gallant Confederate -- A telegram was received here yesterday morning from Staunton, saying that GEO. E. KING, an employee on the chesapeake and Ohio Railroad, was killed at Staunton on Thursday. The deceased was a son of Mr. E. King, of this city, formerly of Richmond, and was formerly a drummer-boy in the Richmond Howitzers. He was the youngest soldier in the Army of Northern Virginia at "Bull Run" and first Manassas, after which colonel Garland, of the 11th Virginia, presented him with a cadetship in the Alabama Military Institute. After one year at Tuscaloose, he returned to the 11th Virginia, and served gallantly as a sergeant till the close of the war. For the past five years he followed the sea, and returned home las Christmas, having been shipwrecked. The deceased had passed through many hot battles and been thrice shipwrecked, and had only been a few days employed as a railroad hand when death overtook him. He was 38 years of age and a master Mason of the Grand Lodge of Scotland. He leaves a wife and two children in Washington.
