I am interested in an order of Patrick County Vol. II when finished. I have a write-up on Mariam Wickham Shelor, mother of John Shelor of Patrick Co,who married Nancy Howell, if you are still taking articles. If so, I will mail it to you. Although she lived first in Maryland, then Floyd, VA, she is the 2nd or 3rd great grandmother of quite a number of Meadows of Dan, Patrick County people including Mary Elizabeth Shelor Wood, Leslie Shelor and most of all the Shelors of Patrick County. What do you say? And, what is the price of the Patrick County Vol II Book? Thanks for the info on Edmund. I figured the death date I had was probably a misprint. The children I have for George and Fanny Fulcher are: Edmund Spencer George William Hardin Phillip James An interesting fact about Phillip and Hardin was that they named some of their legitimate children the SAME names as the apparently illegitimate ones they had with a woman known only as "Missouri Fulcher." Neither brother ever married this woman, but we know that at least two of her children were Hardin's and several are attributed to Philip! By 1850, Missouri (aka Zurah, Zenie, Masoria...) had moved on to Montgomery Co., but she somehow kept having Fulcher children, though no adult male is ever listed in her household on subsequent census reports! Sordid stuff! Let's see if I can explain this one without getting myself too twisted around... The William Penn who married Elizabeth Markham, was the grandson of ANOTHER William Penn (who married Margaret Rasthall of Glouchestershire, England.) One of THIS William Penn's sons, Giles Penn, was the grandfather of THE William Penn, of Pennsylvania fame. I'm not exactly sure how many cousins removed William Penn (married to Elizabeth Markham) and William Penn (of Pennsylvania) are for sure, but if I read it right, (and this is confusing...) the first one's grandfather was the great-grandfather of the second. Yikes...it will make your head spin! In any event, our Patrick Co. Penns are definitely related to the most well known Penn and to the state itself. This is all presuming, however, that everything in the lineage below is absolutely true. Through George Penn and Anne Flemming, this is pretty well documented and can be counted on...BUT, there are some researchers who question the link at John Penn and Lucy Granville. There are others who feel comfortable with this. It seems to be sort of 50-50 with Penn researchers. I personally have this lineage written down in my records, but with the understanding that it could one day be proven incorrect. I actually HOPE it is correct because it is through this direction that the Penns claim heritage back to European royalty. Through Lucy Granville, there is a pretty well documented trail back to the Plantagenet family of British royalty. From there, you can basically connect back to every ruling house in Europe. The Spanish even claim to be able to trace all the way back to Mohammed! It gets pretty wild! (But it's fun to dream...) The whole thing hinges on poor Lucy Granville, though, so it would be nice to have more concrete proof before we start asking folks to call us "your highnesses!" In reference to a posting on this site, copied and pasted below, many of the dates and events shown on the 'url' are incorrect. One example shows that Powhatan County, Virginia was formed in 1777 from Cumberland and Chesterfield Counties. Cumberland is correct. Chesterfield County is incorrect. A very small portion of Chesterfield County was annexed to Powhatan County in the 1849-50 time period. There are quite a few other errors on the site, many showing the order dates of county formations, not the dates that the counties were actually formed. It appears the person or persons putting together the site used incorrect sources, whereas the Library of Virginia would have been the appropriate source to use. A question about Edmond Fulcher Sr. and his wife, Nancy Nowlen: the records I received from a cousin showed Edmond's date of death to be Nov. 6, 1874. The interesting thing, however, is that these records showed the same date for the death of Nancy! Is this a misprint or did they both die on the same day?? Kat ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Taylor Martin Jr." <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, March 16, 2005 8:30 PM Subject: Re: [VAPATRIC] Fw: Penn family George W. & Frances "Fannie" Penn Fulcher were my g-g-g-g grandparents also (via their son Edmond Sr. and then his daughter Elizabeth), but I've done no research on the Penns thusfar. However, I recently purchased the Pedigos' History of Patrick & Henry Counties and they devote about 6 pages to the Penns. So now I'm really confused.... :) From this book: "The first to come to this state was Moses Penn who settled in Caroline County. His wife was Catherine Taylor, and they were the parents of the following children: Frances, George, Phillip, Gabriel, Abram, William, and Moses. Frances Penn married a Rucker and spent her life in Patrick County. No children survived. Gabriel Penn was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, and was promoted to Colonel of the Amherst Militia..." No other Frances is mentioned in these six pages, although the Gabriel name gets passed along a few times. (Abram married Ruth Stovall and had a son Gabriel, but no daughter Frances.) So which of the other siblings does our Fannie belong to? And also, for those of you who may have had this book for sometime, how accurate have you found it to be?
