    3. Hank, do you know anyone who can do a story on this ballteam? We would love to have this photo and story in the Patrick County Heritage Book. It's a neat photo. I applaud your efforts for trying to get pictures such as this labeled. People sometimes just don't understand how importance this effort is. Once people age up, become sick, or die, the people and stories die with those in possession of these pictures. Again, you are to be commended for your effort. 1. Enigma of the Cockerham Family
    2. Cockerhams first came to Virginia in the early 1600s, either to Surry County or King William County. Since that time they have multiplied and spread throughout the states with Florida, Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Texas and Virginia having the highest concentration of Cockerhams today. A genealogical study of the family becomes even more difficult with the variations of the Cockerham surname spelling to include Cochran, Cockerham, Cockern, Cockram, Cockran, Cockren, Cockrum. In an attempt to connect these surname lines and trace them back to early Virginia, many of us have gone up too many blind alleys and run into too many brick walls following false leads. We have exhausted many of the traditional sources and now is the time to employ a different tactic to achieve our goal. Many of us agree with Ann as she says, "Do the easy stuff first, then check to see if a DNA test could guide your research, before you spend lots of money on death certificates or lots of hours scrolling through microfilm records." It may well be that taking a DNA test will become the first step for many genealogical searches. Lorris & Vernon Cockerham are coordinating a DNA survey project, enabling us to establish linage and connections for the surname lines listed above and maybe even tracking the lines into England. If you are interested in adding new information to our family tree, get in touch with Lorris or Vernon "Butch ASAP at the following addresses: Dr. Lorris G. Cockerham ([email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) ) Vernon R. Cockerham ([email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) ) Thanks! Lorris G. 2. Carolyn Bruce
    3. Come on, y'all, don't be shy! Anything that you find is an interesting story, whether funny, sad, odd, historical, scary, or just "interesting", will be welcome in the book. Also, photos have been submitted by some. If you have a photo that meets any of those definitions, we would like to have it, but please let us have captions ...or necessary information so we can write captions... with the photos. The book will be printed in black ink on white paper, but if you have a color photo, don't worry because we can convert it to black and white for the book. If you think you can't write it suitably, don't worry about that either, 'cause I can "adjust" it for you if you want. I'll edit things (spelling, etc.) where necessary, or I can rewrite your story if you tell me to. We're off to a good start, already. Write your story and send it in. We're running low on time. 3. Carolyn Bruce is going to put together a booklet of stories and pictures from our subscribers for the picnic. She needs any story you can remember about your childhood or about growing up in Floyd, Franklin or Patrick. This will be one of the favors for you all to take home. Please send your stories and pictures to her just as soon as possible. Picnic time will be here before you know it. (June 25th ) Her e-mail address is: [email protected] Example -------- Skunk and Cow by Don Conner In the early 1950's, my uncle J.W. Hylton, who lived just over the hill from us, got himself a television set, so almost every night I would walk across the hill in the dark and watch TV until all the stations closed down for the night. There was a fence across the top of the hill which divided our property. We had a couple of cows on our side, and J.W. had a work horse who loved to catch you out in the field and he would run full speed at you, trying to get you to run (so he could chase you), but if you held your ground, "Dick" would come to a screeching halt right in front of your face. So one night I was walking up the hill on J.W.'s side on a pitch black night, and all of a sudden, I hear Dick running at me (yes, in the dark!). Normally I would hold my ground but I was afraid he could not see me in time in the dark to stop, so I ran like a bat out of .... toward the wire fence. The fence had a hole in it that I could bend over and step through. Well, I beat Dick to the fence, bent over and as my foot was coming down on the other side, I saw that it was about to come down on a skunk, who was already positioning himself to spray me. Somehow I managed to change my momentum in mid-air and miss the skunk, falling onto the ground on the far side of him in the process. As the skunk was repositioning himself, I jumped up and started to run, only to fall right over one of our cows who was laying down asleep. When granddaddy Hylton came back from milking the next morning, he said, "Whew! I don't know how in the world ole Betty got sprayed by a skunk. It like to have made me sick milking her! I never told him how Betty came to be sprayed (and Mama threw the milk away for 2-3 days). And I started carrying a lantern when I went over to watch T.V.
