Dear Carolyn, I must have missed the instructions for submitting something for the book. If it is not too much trouble, could you post that information again. I have been having trouble with Cox Communications and have not been getting my messages since March 23rd. I was hoping it would be resolved by now but do not think it is. Thank you for your trouble. Mary, do not pick Monday for the Stuart, VA Courthouse for they are closed on that day at the Library across the street from the Courthouse. If you check guardianship papers, keep in mind my great grandfather William Madison Lawson. What cemeteries are you interested in? We're winding down to the cut-off date for submissions to be in the "picnic" book. Please get any photos or stories to me by Friday, April 29th, or I can't promise you'll be in the book. Hustle! Message from Allison about the Picnic 1. Theme is "The Greatest Generation of Floyd, Franklin and Patrick Counties, VA". The Researchers Picnic will be held at the Zion Lutheran Church in Floyd, VA. We have use of the facilities inside the Church. 2. Wear red, white, blue if you wish: the banners and flower pots will all be r/w/b/ to signify the above theme. 3. Three or four crafts: Marie Spangler and her hand-made porcelain dolls dressed in period clothes. Reasonably priced. And they are fantastic!! You can view some of her presentations on Jack Spangler's web site under Crafts, then click on Dolls. Marie will bring some of Jack Spangler's hand-made doll furniture, as Jack will be off in Indiana to a high-school reunion for his wife and will not be able to be there. We will miss them greatly! 4. Charles Spangler is bringing his wonderful hand-made dulcimers and will demonstrate those. They are beautiful. Also reasonably priced. 5. Charlene Wheeler from Riner will present Creative Memories: how to save and preserve your documents and pictures using beautiful archival materials (i.e., decorative paper, stickers, albums, etc.) You all are going to love these ideas!! 6. We MAY have a 4th craft, but we will not know until the first week in June. 7. We will have 3 tables of genealogy related books, prints, postcards and maps of great interest to us about our ancestors that settled in the area. Rena (our Obit Queen), will bring her wonderful genealogically related books as well. 8. Everyone is to bring something to eat!!!! It's potluck and will be delicious as always. (I will get with you later on some particulars that we will need for sure). Linda Stanley will be bringing all of our paper goods that we will use (plates, utensils, napkins, table cloths, etc.), as well as the genealogy books, maps, postcards from Franklin County. We thank you, Linda. 9. Carolyn Hale Bruce will put together a booklet of stories and pictures about those of us who will be so kind as to send to her. This will be one of your favors to take home. And we thank her a million for taking time to do this. Please take the time to send her your material. Barb S. will post to the list when this time is appropriate. Barb S. will also send her some stories and pictures that she has saved from some of us. 10. Ken Brown will take pictures of all going on at the picnic and will post the pictures after the picnic. Or Barb will post them on our web site. We are grateful to Ken for doing this. 11. Wes Poff will use my digital camera and picture printer to take pictures of all of you who want the pictures and will print them right there. This is a dye-thermal printer and the pictures will last 100 years. (Another favor for each of you.) We thank Wes for taking the time to do this for us. 12. Ann Bailey will be bringing genealogy related books about Floyd County and those from the Museum in Newbern. She is also putting news about us in her publication that comes out in April. Jean Schaeffer is posting some news about our Researchers Picnic in the Floyd County Historical Society newsletter. 13. Ole Pat is trying to "scare up" a thing or two from Patrick County for us. ( Right now they are "sold out"). Boo-Hoo!! 14. AND, we will have some "bluegrass music" played by Temple and Daniel Garrison. Ole Paul would like someone to do the "Flatfoot" dance at some point to their music. 15. Now, for our Fabulous Speaker, who will be our own Effie King Brown, a past President of the Floyd County Historical Society. After 94 years, she knows a LOT about our area and will relate some interesting stories and facts, mixed with a wonderful sense of humor. I could listen to her forever!! 16. Our Meal Prayer will be given by the Reverend James Underwood from Roanoke. What a blessing he is!! 17. I am making a banner for EACH meal table. The only reason I mention this is because I want ALL of you to sign and date the banner with the colored pen provided and we will save these from year to year. After all, we ARE The Greatest Generation!!! 18. There will be several drawings for PRIZES!! These are SUR-PRIZES!!! 19. Rena will give a demonstration on "Grave Dowsing," an age-old art that has been used for centuries to locate water, graves and etc. There is a cemetery right behind the Church where we can go to try out Renas idea of Grave Dowsing. They have had luck with this in Tazewell County. 20. MissKat suggested this so we put her in charge!! Thanks Kat! Sounds like a lot of fun! Each major family name from the list will be represented by a different color yarn, cut into small strips. People can go past a table and pick up one string for each of the names in their genealogy. If the name appears anywhere in their history, it would count. Then, they will tie these yarn strips onto a big safety pin which they will wear while meeting and greeting. It will be fun to see who ends up with the most colors (for the most different names) and how many people share the same ones. If anyone is looking for kin of a particular name, they can easily recognize "cousins" by seeing if someone has that color yarn on their pin. 21. Also, I think Ole Pat has something for us from Patrick County, if not, I will try to find something when I get there. I know we will have brochures on the History of Patrick County that Alpha has been talking about. Time is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Lucky for us, the Boy Scout Troop in Floyd has agreed to help us set up and clean up. They will be working on their Service Hours. Some of you have been talking about sharing your genealogy with new found relatives: if you can come to the picnic, this would be a super time to do that!! We are REALLY hoping that a lot of the NEW MEMBERS to the list will be able to come. You will have the most wonderful time to put in your memory bank!! We hope we have provided something of interest to all of you. Please plan to come and bring your family, children, grandchildren and friends for a fun filled, spectacular day. Let Barb S. know about how many you will be bringing - E-Mail her at [email protected]
I have seen locations on the 1767 tax list and I would like to know about them. Peter Perkins District; Peter Copeland's District; Thomas Chandler's District. Were they all in the same county? Were they close together? There were 3 different men I am researching and each one lived in a different district. I'd like to know if they were close. Thanks for any assistance. Mary
Can someone let me know the location of Stoney Creek? In the late 1700's and early 1800's which county was it in.....Patrick, Henry, or elsewhere? Thanks. Mary
Mary, it is now in Caroll CO VA I think. This would be near Paul`s Creek, near the Surry CO NC line. I am planning a research trip to Patrick Co. May 4 and 5. Although I've done a great deal of research by mail, I'd like to find out what I may have missed because I haven't known enough to ask about it. I'm particularly interested in estate files and guardianship papers, and I would like to locate a couple of cemeteries. Any current information about days and hours open for the Courthouse and the Historical Society would be greatly appreciated. I understand several collections are now at the Bassett Historical Center. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Make Yahoo! your home page http://www.yahoo.com/r/hs

Picnic's around the corner and we still can use more stories for our book, whether they're humorous, sad, whimsical, inspiring, or just the way things were... they'll mean something to us and our families in the future. Get your word processors or your pencils going and send in your remembrances of some of the world's most beautiful country and the people who settled it. Our ancestors were real pioneers, and their stories deserve to be told. We can use photos, too, but please identify those in the photos if you can. Email them directly to me at [email protected], or by USPS at: P.O. Box 64007, Virginia Beach, VA 23467-4007. In the famous words of Snuffy Smith: "Time's a'wastin'!" Susie, Sometime when you are looking through your "Goin" family records, see if you ever come across the first name "Missouri," born maybe around 1820ish. She was also known as "Zurah, Zenie, Masoria, and Zura." We have some reason to think she might have been from the Goin's group or another Melungeon family. It's a long shot, but please keep us in mind. We'd sure like to find her! This is absolutely the last message concerning this subject that will be allowed to reach this List I will be more than glad to discuss it with anyone if you e-mail me privately at [email protected] Lee - You are absolutely right! I should have been more explicit! Do not post fees or prices - From RootsWeb.com Terms & Conditions Content submitted for the purpose of commercial use, advertising or fee for service is prohibited. Change the Subject Line when appropriate in order to make searching for a subject in the archives easier. I am lenient, to an extent, when it comes to messages other than history and genealogy but I do ask that the SUBJECT LINE contain "NOT GENEALOGY" if the message does not pertain to GENEALOGY or HISTORY of Patrick County. This will enable those not interested to delete the message without having to read it. GOOD LUCK & HAVE FUN ! Barb Stanley, List Granny
I am going to say something in defense of our list mom too. I am list manager of a couple of Rootsweb surname lists and it is right in the Rootsweb rules that prices of items for sale are not supposed to be put on the lists, so she is following Rootsweb policy. She has done an excellent job with this list. Charlotte Miller _http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~charlotteamiller/index.html_ (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~charlotteamiller/index.html)
Forgive me, But... Pat and all others involved, I must say here that Ellie too has a private email address, and I personally didn't wish to see any of this discussed on the list. However, since you guys won't hush up about it, I'll share my two cents... I too do not understand why the cost can't be included with the Heritage book information, and though I do not necessarily condone the way Ellie phrased her reply, I also don't want to see note after note condemning her for it while lavishing praise on someone else who could have simply explained her reason for the rule, rather than basically leaving it as a "Because I said so" answer, which is what I feel prompted Ellie's less than polite response. In my opinion, both ladies were in the wrong. I am certain the List Mom has valid reasons for her decision on this, and when she is challenged, an explanation of the reason would probably suffice in quieting the mob. Now, if you'll excuse, I think I shall return to my place along the wall. Ellie, You are barking up the wrong tree when you say mean spirited things about our LIST MOM. She does an excellent job of keeping us in line and helping us way beyond the call to duty. She is very lenient as far as what we discuss, but does like us to change the subject line which we usually forget to do. We have a great group here and if you cannot say nice things then don't say anything at all. I don't know what list you administer but I for one sure am glad I am not signed up on that one. Our LIST MOM is a kind considerate person and has manners which obviously you do not! Also, we all have private email addresses and Alpha more than once has given hers out so if you had questions about the book you could have emailed her privately to get the cost of the book. Rules are rules, you need to follow them. This seems like an appropriate time to express gratitude to Barbara Stanley for the marvelous job she does as list administrator. This is one of the best lists to which I subscribe. One peeve I have noted lately, however, is that some subscribers are posting thank-you notes that are of little interest to most of us. Someone searching the archives for information in the future will have to wade through all of these. Charles Leon Harris
Dear Charles: You've made a good point. We could do our thank-you's off-list and cut down on the archived messages. Barb lets us have so many interesting conversations, we ought to all be eager to cooperate with the few rules she sets and with anything that assists her. I second your endorsement of Barb. She's absolutely the BEST list mom. I want to be just like her when I grow up. And perhaps some people need to find another list to vent on. This isn't the place. The VAST majority of us think Barb is doing a fabulous job and wouldn't have her change a thing. One of the reasons why the lists she administers are SO great is that she DOESN'T exercise alot of "power" and hinder free conversation, even when it does not strictly pertain to "pure" genealogy.
