Thanks for the info. Edmund Fulcher Sr. was the brother of my husband's g-g-g-grandfather, Hardin Fulcher. Both were sons of George Fulcher and Frances "Fanny" Penn. My bad, Pat! I indeed meant Lucy Ann Martin, daughter of John "Crook" Martin and Elizabeth Ann Fulcher. (I had been transcribing a letter earlier from Lucy Elizabeth "Beadie" Taylor Martin.) I have a question: Are Lucy Elizabeth Martin and Lucy Ann Martin one in the same? The reason I ask this is my sources indicate the following: "Patrick Co. marriages, 1875-1900; Eunice B. Kirkman; p. 64....25 Dec 1883, John W. Fulcher, 21, b. Patrick Co.; son of Gabriel and Sarah A. Fulcher, married Lucy A. Martin, 18, b. Patrick, dau of J & E.A. Martin." Pat C. Johns in Va.
I think we can rule out a second Lucy as the 1910 census shows them to have been married for 26 years. Mysteries are fun... :) John Taylor > John W. Fulcher md first 25 Dec 1883 to Lucy A. Here are some ideas, no real proof to solve the mystery. John W. Fulcher md first 25 Dec 1883 to Lucy A. Martin. Now, Lucy was not dead in 1910 as you stated and as the census shows. Consider the possibility that Lucy Martin died circa 1902 and John married again 1900-1902 to another Lucy. This census shows that John had a daughter Lucy born 1901-2 ------------------------------------------- 1930 Mayo River, Patrick County, Virginia; ED 8; Roll: T626_2454; Page 245, Sheet 11A;lines 23-28; img 21 Enumerated 18 April 1930, visit 198 Road from Stella to Salem Church Md at ages 29, 20 (abt 1921) Hassie T Reynolds 37 abt 1893 Head Va Va Va Farmer Lucy M Reynolds 28 abt 1902 Wife Va Va Va Irvine A Reynolds 7 abt 1923 Dau Va Va Va Iris Reynolds 4.11 abt 1926 Dau Va Va Va Elsa Reynolds 2.7 abt 1928 Dau Va Va Va John W Fulcher 68 abt 1861 Father-in-law Wid. I've been transcribing some old family letters. In one letter dated June 23, 1900, "the Show" in Stuart is mentioned and later "the Sacrament at Goblintown". Can anyone shed any light on what specific events are being referred to here? The letter is from my Gr-granduncle Joe Taylor to my Gr-grandmother Emma Taylor Martin. At the time of this letter Joe is living in Elamsville as a boarder with William C. Hooker who has a store in Elamsville. Emma and Robert live about a mile (as the crow flies) behind the Patrick Springs Hotel toward Bull Mountain. The full transcription follows. My comments are in brackets... - John Taylor Elamsville Va, June 23 [Saturday] 1900 Dear Emma, I rec'd your letter sometime ago and will try to drop you a few lines tonight. This leaves me well, hope will find you all the same. The rain is certainly falling hard now. We have had plenty rain this week. I was nearly done cutting wheat when the rain set in. Our wheat is good. I haven't done any work since Thursday, it has rained every day since. I was looking for Bro John [John S. Taylor] down today, but I guess it rained too much for him to come. I want to go to the C.H. Tuesday. Maybe I will get to see Robt there [John Robert Martin, Emma's husband]. Or has he quit going to court? I guess you all went to the Show at Stuart. I went over there that day with the wagon but did not have time to go in the Show. I go to Stuart once every week with the wagon. Sunday morning. It is still raining and I am afraid my wheat will spoil in the shack. If I lose my wheat, I can't marry. [Joe never married.] Sunday night. Emma, I will finish my short letter tonight. I spent most of the day at Mr Ayers. I got as many May and June apples as I could eat. The trees are full. Do you remember about eating so many May apples every summer. Well I guess I will come to see you next Saturday if nothing happens to me. I want to stay over till Monday so I can get to see all. I want to see you all so bad. I wish I did live close to you so I could be with you often. I saw Tim Fulcher yesterday. He passed here and stopped at the store [the William Hooker store] a while. Well I must close for tonight. I will find out when Sacrament comes off at Goblintown and tell you when I come. Write and come soon. Love to all. Your Bro, Joe Taylor
Sorry to be so late in getting to the point of Bill's message below, but there are apparently four or more HALE lines that ran through Franklin CoVA in the 1700s, rather than one big bunch. According to DNA tests run through Family Tree DNA, "my" Franklin County HALE line does not match with descendants of Joseph HALE who died and left a will in Patrick County in 1803, nor with descendants of Nicholas HALE who entered Jamestown in the early 1600s, nor with Lewis HALE who m. Mary BURWELL. Neither do their descendants match with each other. Among the men who were tested who do match "my line" to a close degree, we have no idea of how they relate to each other, or of their earlier ancestry. John Hale b. 1765 probably in Southwestern Virginia, later Franklin CoVA, is the earliest among the three, and we don't know of his origins. Somewhere, back in the mists of the ages, I have a memory of my father telling me that "our HALEs" came down from Pennsylvania... there were seven(?) brothers who traveled together. How accurate my memory is can be debated, but who knows? There could be some truth to the memory. Anyway, if you want more information about the DNA tests, go to http://www.familytreedna.com/public/hale/ I am forwarding this message to several other lists that I think might be interested. Hello List, It is crunch time for the Patrick Co Heritage Book. The deadline for submitting an article/photo into the book is Monday June 20th. If you are mailing anything, it must be postmarked no later than June 20th or it will not be included in the book. If you are bringing the article/photos to Stuart, they should be in our hands no later than Monday June 20th. Due to the over-whelming response to Volume II, we cannot accept any changes or replacement articles for the book. This includes those we have already received. Also, we are sorry but we cannot give you a confirmation as to whether or not your article has been received. We just have so much work to get done and simply do not have time to let anyone know for sure if their article and pictures were received. If you want to order a copy of the book, please get those in now because we are not printing any extra books. If you do not have an order in and paid for, you will not be able to get a copy of the book after they are printed. We may do a reprint at some date in the future but that might be several years from now. If you want the cost of the book, PLEASE! email me at my personal email address <[email protected]>. Our list mom has been so nice to let us talk about the book online and the rules are - WE CANNOT PUT PRICES OF ANYTHING ON THE LIST. A BIG thank you to all who have participated in the PC Heritage Book, whether submitting stories or ordering a copy of the book. Without you all we wouldn't be working so hard to put together the best book that we can. Sincerely, Pat Long Roanoke, VA <[email protected]>

Hi All, I have posted new Lee Notes- on our Home page, John & Elnora Cook-Wyrick Families; http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/w/y/r/Elnora--F-Wyrick/ Any new Cousins out there?. Recent DNA Tests proves our Lee Line is not connected to the "Leesville, VA., Lees", or any of the other Lee Lines tested to date; We are hoping other Lees will test so we can find our Line. There is some evidence that John G. Lee's parents may have been John Lee and Frances Ward, that is not confirmed to me at this time. Thanks, Elnora Frances Cook-Wyrick Yesterday is a memory, Tomorrow is a dream, Today is a Gift
I'm looking for an Elizabeth Gardner who was born in Patrick County, 1786. She moved with her parents when she was young to Buncombe County, NC. She married Thomas Wilson there or in Tennessee. Also looking for a genealogist who may be able to help me get some research done in Patrick County, as I am a ways from Virginia - in Arizona. In advance, thanks, Bob Massengill
