This is the MOST excellent USGS site and does include variant names: http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic/f?p=115:1:16109474133249025626 Jan Hensnley -----Original Message----- From: Jane Tressel [mailto:jtressel@rochester.rr.com] Sent: Sunday, February 12, 2006 10:43 AM To: VAORANGE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [VAORANGE] North Anna River Bob, I wonder if you might be able to answer a question that I've had for some time. This is not an Orange Co. question as much as it is a "geographic names" question. I have been looking for a creek in Botetourt Co., VA: Long's Entry Creek. It doesn't appear on contemporary maps nor have I been able to find it on antique maps. Does the U.S. Board of Geographic Names have a data base of defunct geographic names and a locator tool which allows for correct placement of historic names on contemporary maps? Thank you. I had used the USGS site about a year for my search, but with no success. Jan, I do agree that it is an excellent site. Thank you for suggesting it. Thanks, Jan. the information from the site you sent says that the North Fork of the North Anna is a variant name for the Pamunkey Creek. Not what I wanted to hear.....but it does make sense as the map in the back room of the Orange County Historical Society show the land of Joseph and John Hawkins to be located in just the right place for boundaries to be described using that watercourse as a boundary. I am a little disappointed that it shoots my theory....but I am always happy to get accurate information. Thanks so much for sharing with me the website that solved my puzzle. marsha in WV Jan Hensley wrote: >This is the MOST excellent USGS site and does include variant names: > >http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic/f?p=115:1:16109474133249025626 > > > > > > >
