    1. Seeking info on Fortune and Wilhoite
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Wilhoite and Fortune Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/0AC.2ACE/919 Message Board Post: I am looking for information on two people (okay there may be extra folks I'm looking for): 1. Alexander Fortune who married Dicey Murray (born abt 1825 in Culpeper, Va). They supposedly had 5 kids (according to my family): - Armstead - Willie Ann, - Mary, born abt 1850 - Reuban Bama (I saw a Bama, female born abt 1859, living with Dicey's son, Samuel Wilhoite (see #2 below), on the 1870 census. I wonder if this is the same Bama? Where can I go from here as she seem to have disappeared. - James Fortune, born abt May 1855 2. Souther Wilhoite who, in my family, is said to be Dicey Murray's slave holder. She had 3 sons by Souther named: - Edward (born abt 1838 married Ann Frye born abt 1850). - Samuel (born abt 1843 married Helen Sneed). I found him in 1870 and 1880 census. What baffles me is that the 1880 census lists a half-brother named Edmon Fortune (which I do not have as Dicey's children from Alexander Fortune) born abt 1844. Perhaps this is his first/middle name that I do not have record of? He too is a mystery to me so if you have info on this Edmon Fortune I'd be most grateful. This same 1880 census lists his mother as Dicy Phillips instead of Murray as my family has it. So now I'm stumped with which name is which. Does anyone have any information on this Dicy Phillips (or Murray)? - Lawrence (born abt 1845 married Malinda Gordon born abt 1850). I personally believe that this Souther Wilhoite is the same as Michael Souther Wilhoite born 4 Apr 1819 to Mary Souther and David Wilhoite. Seems that his brother Benjamin Gaar Wilhoit had a bunch of slaves in Culpeper around that time. But I have no proof that he was the holder of Dicey. It only makes sense because my family's history has Dicey's slave owner named "Souther" Wilhoite. But then there were other slave owners in Culpeper: Curtis Wilhoite, Smith Wilhoite, Jane Wilhoite. But none of these seem to have any connection with a "Souther" and they do tend to transfer the wife's last name to one of the kids' first name a lot. Does anyone have more information? Can anyone help me or point me where to go next?
