I am trying to look at the Hawkins's in Orange County, Virginia between 1775 and 1850. I would appreciate any additions, corrections, ideas, etc that anyone might have. It is my understanding that there are not Censuses available for any part of Virginia in 1790. And none for Orange County in 1800 nor in 1810. So the first census available for Orange is in 1820. So I will start with the Personal Property Tax List of Orange County, Virginia for April 1782. I would particularly like information about what part of the county the men taking the names and information would have been looking at. There is no Hawkins on the list taken by Thomas Barbour List taken by Thomas Bell includes the following: Benjamin Hawkins with slaves Cate, Dycey, Eastridge, Susannah, Tenar and Henry Jehu Hawkins with slave Agatha James Hawkins with slaves Tony, Joe, Phil, Joe Mary, Ann, Rachel, and Winny There is not Hawkins on the list take by Zachariah Burnley nor that of Catlett Conway The list made by Benjamin Grymes includes: William Hawkins A. Hawkins Nicholas Hawkins Elisha Hawkins There is no Hawkins on list made by James Madison nor William Moore the following on the list made by Johnny Scott: John Hawkins No Hawkins on list taken by Andrew Shepherd nor on that by Rowland Thomas nor that of Jeremiah White Now who were these men? The first and only Benjamin on the list may or may not have been Benjamin married to Sarah Willis as this Benjamin is said to have died in 1782 or 1783. Looking ahead at 1783 he is no longer on the list made by Thomas Bell, so it is likely that this is indeed Benjamin Hawkins married to Sarah Willis and was father to James, Benjamin, William who married Bourne sisters and Moses who married Susannah Strother and died in the Revolution and Lucy who married Francis Moore and Mildred who married Mr. Plunkett. I have no clue on Jehu....I don't know that I have ever heard of Jehu Hawkins before. James is still around in the 1783 tax list and he is likely to have been the son of Benjamin and Sarah Willis who married Jane Bourne as this couple had married in 1781 and he is about 37 years old. It makes sense that he might have lived close to his parents. But you know James has 8 slaves, and 6 horses and 13 meat cattle--he seems more affluent than his father....does this make sense? Is there another James Hawkins who might have been in Orange? William Hawkins could have either been the William who was son of the William and Elizabeth Hawkins who was named in William's will in 1776. This will is witnessed by William Strother and Uriel Mallory both of who are associated with the Hawkins line that I research. Benjamin and Sarah Willis also have a son named William--but I don't have dates of birth or marriage for this William so I don't know if he would have still been in his father's household or out on his own by 1782. A Hawkins is perhaps Arculus who is named in his mother's will in 1800. Arculus seems to be married to Lucy. This will is witnessed by Jas Hawkins Nicholas Hawkins is perhaps the Nicholas who married Elizabeth Jones and is the father of Thomas Jefferson Hawkins and Elijah Hawkins, I don't have dates for this couple, so I am not sure about when they would have been in Orange, but their sons marry circa 1807 and 1816 so it would make sense for the couple to have had a household by 1782. Elisha I don't recognize. John Hawkins is probably the son of William Hawkins married to Elizabeth who names son John in his will in 1776 and leaves him the rest of his estate. This William Hawkins names names three sons: John, Benjamin, and William. I think that John was probably the youngest and still at home when the will was made. I think that probably William has already given his older two sons their portions before his death. Anyone have any ideas on interpreting this information? Marsha in WV
