    3. The following is some of the information found in the book "Shiflet (and variant spellings) 1700 to 1900. Stephen Shiflett was born in Orange County, VA, in the early 1730's and married Elizabeth Powell of Culpepper County, VA, daughter of John Powell. It says only a few documents exist which pertain to him. They think this is because he died at a relatively early age (probalby mid- to early forties). It is believed he is the son of either John or Stephen Shiflet, emigrants to Colonial Americia by way of King William County. It says he was the father of numerous children, but only Benjamin, Frances, Joice, and Winny are documented. There is said to be a deed in Orange County, Deed Book 15, page 332. The book also mentions some other articles and an inventory of his estate when he died. It says his wife Elisabeth appears in the 1782 and 1785 Orange County Census as Head of the Household with five white souls listed in the household. It is says his daughter Joice married Lewis Stowers, a Revolutionary War Veteran in 1787, Orange County, VA, Marriage Bond Jul 4, 1787, Frances married Samuel Self, Orange County VA, Marriage Bond Dec 26, 1787, and Winny Shiflet, married James Page, son of Elizabeth Page, Orange County Marriage Bond, Dec 3, 1789. Son Benjamin Shiflett is believed to have been around 20 when he died.
