Children of Shenandoah Homecoming Picnic Sunday, June 24, 1-5 p.m. (Maps available at: http://www.nps.gov/shen/map.htm ) South River Picnic Grounds, Shenandoah National Park Rain Date: Sunday, July 15, 1-5 p.m. Please join us for our 8th annual pot-luck and musical extravaganza.(You don't have to be a member of COS to come, we welcome you all, just bring covered dish) Bring photographs, maps, documents, or anything else you'd like to let others know about. The park fee is waived if you tell the ranger at the check-in station that you are a member of COS. In case of rain, please call Christine Hoepfner at 540/743-4420, or check the new COS internet group list: groups.yahoo.com/group/ChildrenoftheShenandoah Volume 7, No. 3 May 2001 Update on The Gift (The Film that shows at Bryd Visitor Center) Karen Michaud at SNP reports that the Park has scheduled its "last" edit for the revision during the week of June 4. The new video has been announced in the park's "Overlook" visitor guide, but no final date for showing it has yet been set. Update on Exhibit at Byrd Center Claire Comer from SNP reports that the park has added 4 more county maps: Page,Warren, Albemarle, and Greene, so that 7 of the 8 counties from which the park was formed are represented. Also added were representative family panels for each of the new maps. The Rappahannock County map is not yet included because, so far, permission has not been received to conserve and copy it. Unless the park gets that permission, it does not have any immediate plans to expand or change the exhibit. The park will continue to gather visitors' and stakeholders' reactions. COS in Cyberspace Children of the Shenandoah now has a presence on the Internet, a discussion/message board list at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ChildrenoftheShenandoah, and a website at http://www.usgennet.org/usa/va/shenan/ . (to be developed soon, is there any help out there?) New member Carol Laing, whose mother, Lucille Pearl Dodson,(and grandparents Lizzie Ethel Atkins Dodson and John Walker Dodson, Lizzie's parents were Marion Francis Atkins and Laura Bell Dodson) lived on land that was taken for the park in "the Hazel," Nichols Holler behind the Beech Springs Church, is the list moderator and may be reached at [email protected] or (540) 635-7521 or 60 Laing Road, Front Royal, Virginia 22630. If you are interested in adding pictures, stories, articles, etc., let us know. We hope to expand upon what we have. If you have any problems subscribing to the list, please contact Carol Laing and she will be happy to assist you. If for any reason you can't add or post to the list, please contact Carol (or Christine Hoepfner at 540/743-4420) and we will be glad to help you. We are looking for your input!!! We also are looking for input for the website http://www.usgennet.org/usa/va/shenan/ . This site will provide great publicity for the Children of Shenandoah, since it will list us under many other genealogy and historical websites. Carol P.
