    1. Re: [VAORANGE] Powell
    2. I am related to the Powells, Kirtley's and the Hawkins. This William Brockman Bell is related to this line but I have not found out how as yet. John Bell married Elizabeth Kirtkey Theior son William Bell married Frances Boston, daughter of Rueben and Sarah Francis Hawkins Boston. Thier Son was Captain Francis Kirtley Bell who married Mary Margaret Powell, daughter of William Lewis and Mary McMullan Powell their daughter Mary Margaret Bell married John Tanner Davenport. There are three mountains that where very close to each other, Kirtley's were on the Left and Bostons, were on the right. These mounains were a mile from Gordonsville, the largest mountain was own first by a Zachery Taylor. When the first William Bell came to Orange County, he leased 17 arces of this mountain from a Zachery Taylor. There neighbors were the Bostons who were related to the Hawkin Clan. This William Bell married Elizabeth Cave Johnson, she was married before to another gent. They had two children that I have found, Sarah Frances Bell who married William Golding and John Bell who married Elizabeth Kirtley, daughter of Francis and Elizabeth Ann Powell Kirtley, Jr. She was daughter of Honorias and Jeanette Kirtley Powell. Soon after the mountain was known as Bells Mountain. It was in the family line from 1760 when the first Bell came to Orange County from Augusta County to 1900 when the Davenport family sold the 17 arces to the Camerons. It then became Camerons Mountain. Hope this helps Cathy

    3. Cathy, it is clear to me that we are talking about all of the same people....I recognize almost everyone that you name below. ....well at least until you get to the much later family members. Will you keep chatting with me until we figure out the Powell connection? I don't think that my 2-gr-grandfather carried the name Edward Powell Hawkins by chance.....I think that his name is a clue to who his grandparents or gr-grandparents were or at least who their friends/neighbors/relatives were. I know that he was entertwined with the Bell family: Edward Powell Hawkins's father was Thomas R. Hawkins. He is said to have lived his entire life in Orange County. He is found both witnessing and being bondsman in the following marriage: > William B. Bell (Jr.) and Frances Newman 17 Dec 1821; wit Thomas R. > Hawkins and Bonner S. Newman and P.S. Fry. Bondsman Thomas R. > Hawkins Frances Newman is said to be the daughter of Andrew Newman also in the formation of the Zion Baptist Church the following men are present: > > About three and one half miles south of Orange in the home of Brother > Hawkins, with James Arnold, Roger Mallory, Nicolas Bickers, Joseph > Atkins (clerk), James Perry (deacon), Killie Hoard, Benjamin Hawkins, > Hamlet Sanford, John Rogers (deacon), William Bell, William Mallory, > William Hancock, William Embry, Coleman Marshall (deacon), Henry > Perry, John Churchill Gordon (pastor), and Thomas Hawkins, seventeen > in all. Thanks so much for taking the time to respond to the below. marsha CatheriHon@aol.com wrote: >I am related to the Powells, Kirtley's and the Hawkins.
