    3. I got a bit long winded, so I am going to ask my question both at the beginning and end: My question is does anyone know if there was a doctor who might have delivered babies, a famous or respected neighbor, etc in Orange County in this time period with the name Powell? I was reviewing a report sent to me by another researcher with the following" 9. RUEBEN POWELL BELL (FRANCES4 BOSTON, SARAH3 HAWKINS, BENJAMIN2, BENJAMIN J.1) was born September 14, 1807 in Orange County Va.. He married (1) SARAH MCKAY August 18, 1832 in Page County Va.. She was born Abt. 1810 in Page County Va.. He married (2) SARAH C. JONES May 16, 1842 in Page County Va.. She was born May 21, 1822 in Caroline City VirginiaOrange County Va.. My brick wall in Orange County is Thomas R. Hawkins who named his only son, Edward Powell Hawkins. I am quite certain that this family had connections to my Thomas R. Hawkins both because of DNA results which link my Hawkins line with the Hawkins family named above and also because my Thomas R. Hawkins is found as both a bondsman and witness at a Bell marriage: William B. Bell (Jr.) and Frances Newman 17 Dec 1821; wit Thomas R. Hawkins and Bonner S. Newman and P.S. Fry. Bondsman Thomas R. Hawkins Frances Newman is said to be the daughter of Andrew Newman. My question is does anyone know if there was a doctor who might have delivered babies, a famous or respected neighbor, etc in Orange County in this time period for whom these children might have been named? Is it likely to have been a maiden name of a mother or grandmother? Any ideas. marsha in WV

    3. Rueben's grandmother was Elizabeth Kirtley, the daughter of Captain Francis Kirtley & Elizabeth Powell (daughter of Honorias Powell, Jr.). The Bells, Kirtley & Powells all lived in the same area and the Kirtleys & Powells were of some prominence. I do know that their descendants married into descendants of Benjamin Hawkins. 3. Hi Marsha, I don't know if this is ANY help at all, but it COULD be a link.... I grew up in an area of Spotsylvania County that borders on Orange County. The people across the road from me went to Orange schools and I went to Spotsylvania. Can't get MUCH closer to the border! :-) Anyway, a couple of miles from my house was a monument to Dr. Powell. I don't know anything about him except that he died of a gunshot wound. Seems some men prefer to keep their wives to themselves and not share them with the good doctor. :-0 I could ask my parents if they know any of the history....ie how long ago he was around...etc... I don't know if there were any dates on the monument - an obelisk about 8-10 feet tall by my recollection - but they may have an idea of the time frame. I always assumed it was around the 40s or 50s, but my have been much earlier. I will ask.
