I have recently done some research on Augusta County ancestors, west of Orange County across the Blue Ridge, and found that Augusta County records were kept in Orange County until Augusta was organized. I believe the date of Augusta formation was around 1738, but records were kept in Orange until about 1745. If someone shows up in Orange County records around that time, but then seems to disappear, it might be because they actually resided in Augusta County.
