Hi. I know that people put a lot of effort into researching their family tree. But the information you find should be shared with other people researching the same family lines. The information you gather is not a treasure to be hoarded but a bounty to be shared with others doing the same thing you are doing.I share with you,you share with me. We all benefit. Ancestry is a Mormon site,I am not a Mormon ,but do use their data bases & websites to help me with my research. I do not begrudge them using information I generate using their software. If you don't want to share ,don't use their software! Paul Harman By the way ,does anyone have anything new on Zacharia Harman in Orange Co.?
First of all, I agree with the person who was fed up with companies using his/her information & charging for it. I have spent over 20 years & untold money researching my family and have shared it with others, but will be very selective who I share with in the future. Several of those "others" have taken my information, combined it with information from untold others & put it on the web as their information & families. One lady in particular put information about my grandmother & ggrmother on the web (both a pay for & free site)as her family, changing my grgrandmother's name, and other names & dates. She is not even related to my family on that line. Another person took my direct line (he's related thru a very distant collateral line) and added incorrect information. It gets very annoying when you share & people change your documented information to undocumented info and put it on sites that charge. It's like a big contest to see who can put the most names into their ! database, and that's not what genealogy is about. Secondly, Ancestry is NOT a Mormon site. It is probably owned by Mormons, but the LDS Church has nothing to do with Ancestry!! Maybe you're thinking of the Ancestral File, which is part of the LDS website.
Whether you remember my posts from winter 2004 or not, I feel the need to make a correction for the archives. At that time while working with a buddy, I chose to adopt Benjamin Hawkins as a father for my Thomas R. Hawkins. Thomas is my 3-gr-grandfather and I am very certain of the connections leading to him. I have had to "unadopt" Benjamin Hawkins as his father this year, however. I had found that the Benjamin that I was looking at was living in Orange County in 1840 according to the census. However, by 1850 he had disappeared from the Orange County, Virginia Census. While looking at Orange County resources available through the LDS FHL, I found a will for a Benjamin Hawkins dated circa 1841. So I ordered it. I have only looked at it briefly just before I left to go out of town a couple of weeks ago. However the good news is that it is definitely the will for the Benjamin that I have been looking at. The bad news (actually not so bad...) is that he specifically says that he leaves all of his land to his NEPHEW Thomas R. Hawkins. So I am back to square one on who Thomas's father is. In case anyone else is interested in this Orange County Hawkins will, my quick notes say that he also mentions: his wife Mary niece Mary Hawkins Sarah F. Coleman Matilda Marshall Josanna Marshall land that he had laid off to sell to John Todd bounded by Charles Scott and William Cole (dec)_ and friend William C. Scott Let me know if any of these names have meaning for any of the researchers on this list. I hope to get a chance to get a better look at the will this coming Saturday if anyone wants more information. Marsha in WV

Joseph Boston is my 2G Grandfather. Joseph Boston was born in 1843 and died in 1880. Joseph's mother was named Jane and she was born in Virginia around 1830. Based on the fact that there were several Boston surnamed families in the Orange and Albemarle County areas, I am focusing my research on these areas. The South Carolina history books say that Joseph Boston arrived in Newberry, South Carolina around 1847. Before the Civil War, he was owned by William Daniel Reagin in South Carolina. Presumably, Joseph and Jane moved together to South Carolina since Joseph would have been about 4 and Jane would have been about 17. Has anyone come across any wills, bills of sale, asset schedules or other documents that might refer to slaves owned by any Bostons in Orange or Albemarle County, Virginia between 1830 and 1847? Alternatively, does anyone know of any connection between the Bostons of Virginia and William Daniel Reagin of Newberry, SC? Any leads or other assistance would be appreciated. Thanks.

My wife has a great-great-aunt known to us as Elizabeth G. Martin, with a birthdate of March 23, 1859. I suspect that's the same person even though the birthdates are different by a few days. The source of our birthdate is oral recollections by my wife's grandfather, Arthur Elmore Martin, as transcribed by my wife's father. Mr. Martin knew of the three wives of W. H. Martin, and his 17 children and some dates. But, except for some transcriptions from the cemetery in Unionville, thats about all we know about our Martin genealogy. My wife's maiden name, if I haven't told you, was Martha Lee Lucy. Happy to share what we do know.
Samuel Drake was mentioned in the Road Order Books in 1734 and 1738. He was on a list of those who had paid their passageway "from abroad" in 1735. By 1748, the only reference to him in the road books was a mention of "the field where Samuel Drake used to live." I'm looking for any information on him. Where did he come from? When and on what ship? Where did he go? Whom did he marry and who were his children? When did he die? A Samuel Drake was mentioned in Bedford CO in 1763 and John and Benjamin Drake were mentioned there with Samuel in 1767. Was this the same Samuel or his son? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Barb Marshall <marchado@pacbell.net>

He would have been born bet. 1763-1768 in Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania Co. VA. This John Spotswood married a lady by the name of Miss Coughenour on or before 1823. Our Charles Cogley Spotswood was born on 11 Nov 1823 in Gettysburg, Adams Co. PA. We have come to the conclusion that our John must have crawled out from underneath a rock or something like that because we can't find nothing on him regarding this marriage, nor his son. Anyway, in our Family Bible it has John Spotswood as being his father and his father dying of his wounds that he had received in the Seminole Indian Wars. About 1818-1838. States that his father died when he was 55 years old, but it doesn't give a date or where or exactly when. There is absolutely nothing on our Coughenour lady, no birth, no death date although we suspect that she must have died while having Charles, and it doesn't even give her first name at all. There again we come up empty handed. If any of you have any information regarding this particular Spotswood/Coughenour relationship we would greatly appreciate it if you would enlighten us about him and his wife Miss Coughenour. Thanks in advance, Bill
